About The Position

SMS Equipment is expanding its underground operations and is hiring a Journeyperson, Heavy Duty Mechanic for Edmonton, AB. This role focuses on component rebuilds and rockdrill diagnostics in a clean, well-equipped shop environment. The position is classified as an Individual Contributor role, requiring demonstration of core competencies such as customer focus, collaboration, and technical/functional expertise. Requirements

Heavy Equipment Technician Journeyperson certificate
Experience working with underground mining equipment
Diagnostic skills in hydraulic, electronic, mechanical, and electrical systems.
Ability to use precise measuring equipment.
Strong awareness and attitude towards workplace health and safety, including understanding and complying with all requirements.
May involve lifting up to 50 lbs
Comfortable working in confined spaces.

Nice To Haves

Experience with Montabert drifters is an asset.
Experience with bolters and jumbos is an asset.
Equivalent combinations of education and shop-based experience may be considered.

Responsibilities

Perform full overhauls, diagnostics, and repairs on underground drifters—primarily Montabert and will also work with Sandvik and Epiroc.
Use measuring tools and precision equipment to assess wear, tolerances, and overall equipment condition.
Diagnose malfunctions using proper testing equipment and provide recommendations based on repair needs.
Support underground operations by troubleshooting mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical issues on mobile and stationary mining equipment.
Maintain detailed service reports, timecards, and warranty documentation.
Travel to customer sites as needed.
Support continuous improvement by keeping work areas clean, organized, and ready for the next task.
