About The Position

Writing Center Consultants meet with students in all disciplines and majors to give them constructive feedback on academic or non-academic papers, projects, and presentations. Consultants may meet with students in person or remotely (both synchronously via Teams and asynchronously via written feedback). Consultants also help produce online writing aids and resources under the direction of the Writing Center Director and Graduate Consultants. At times, Undergraduate Consultants may engage in marketing efforts such as flyer postings and classroom presentations. Undergraduate Consultants may take on special projects under the supervision of Graduate Consultants and the Writing Center Director, including the duties of course consultancy, where the Undergraduate Consultant tracks writing assignments and potentially collaborates in creating in-class workshop(s) for a specific course. Graduate Consultants may engage in leading/mentoring undergraduate Consultants in these endeavors. Consultants are hired annually for a period of one academic year or one summer term. Students must reapply to the Writing Center for every academic year or summer term they are seeking employment.

Requirements

  • Sophomore standing or above
  • Ability to identify and communicate constructive written and verbal feedback for students regarding writing and multimodal compositions in any academic subject
  • Desire to help other students with their writing and composing
  • Interest in theory and practice of writing consultation and instruction
  • Ability to self-manage assigned appointments, synchronous feedback, and track writing assignments for course consultancy
  • Strong background in writing and composing
  • Strong understanding of writing and composing as a process
  • Familiarity with, or motivation to learn, various documentation styles (e.g., APA , MLA , etc.)
  • Familiarity with, or motivation to learn how AI-use functions as a part of the modern academic writing process, with the aim of understanding student use and promoting ethical use.

Responsibilities

  • Provide students with constructive feedback and encouragement on their writing and other academic projects and presentations across disciplines.
  • Manage assigned asynchronous requests on each shift.
  • Hold all assigned synchronous meetings (in-person and remote) on time.
  • Participate in the production of online writing resources and workshops, as well as marketing efforts in conjunction with the graduate lead, as assigned.
  • Maintain awareness of writing assignments and deadlines for assigned course consultancy classes, and potentially participate in developing and delivering in-class workshops for these courses with the guidance of the Director and/or Graduate Consultant(s).
