About The Position

This is a part-time, non-benefited position for an undergraduate student to assist in research involving bio-based polymer precursors and epoxy resin formulations. The role involves conducting material characterization, supporting fabrication and optimization of polymer specimens using additive manufacturing techniques, and maintaining laboratory operations. The position requires approximately 10 hours per week and is fully remote.

Requirements

  • Hands-on experience in polymer science, synthesis, and development
  • Hands-on experience with additive manufacturing and material characterization
  • Proficiency in chemical analytical analysis
  • Strong background in material characterization (SEM, XRD, FTIR, TGA, DSC, GC-MS)
  • Enrolled as an undergraduate student in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a closely related STEM discipline.
  • Completed (or currently enrolled in) introductory chemistry and laboratory courses with demonstrated laboratory safety awareness.
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to accurately maintain laboratory notebooks and experimental records.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, work independently after training, and collaborate effectively as part of a multidisciplinary research team.
  • Willingness to commit approximately 10 hours per week for the duration of the project or as determined by the research supervisor.
  • Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office (Excel and Word).
  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with data analysis software is desirable but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the synthesis, purification, and preparation of bio-based polymer precursors and epoxy resin formulations following established laboratory protocols.
  • Conduct material characterization, including mechanical, thermal, and antimicrobial testing, and accurately record, analyze, and summarize experimental data.
  • Support the fabrication and optimization of polymer specimens using 3D printing and other additive manufacturing techniques, including evaluating printability and processing parameters.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment, prepare chemical solutions and samples, follow laboratory safety procedures, and contribute to research reports, presentations, and scientific publications.
