About The Position

The American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) is seeking a UN Representative, Program and Outreach for the Quaker UN Office (QUNO) in New York. This role functions as a senior member of the QUNO team, sharing program responsibilities and taking particular care for QUNO outreach efforts and the QUNO Program Assistant program. The position involves developing and implementing work on QUNO program plans, leading outreach efforts with Quaker communities, overseeing the Program Assistant program, and reporting to the QUNC. The role also supervises and mentors one of the QUNO Program Assistants. QUNO New York works in partnership with UN diplomats and officials to increase global commitment to the UN’s role in building lasting peace, by building bridges between the UN and voices from the ground. QUNO staff facilitate dialogue, bring new ideas to the international policy agenda, offer expert input, and represent Quaker insights and concerns at the UN.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in international affairs, public policy, international law, non-profit administration, or related field.
  • Minimum seven years of experience in non-profit administration and program implementation.
  • Additional experience in staff supervision.
  • Demonstrated program experience in a related field (e.g., international affairs, peacebuilding and conflict resolution, international humanitarian assistance and development, public policy and diplomacy).
  • Knowledge of the UN system and international diplomacy.
  • Commitment to values-based policy or social change work.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for productive teamwork.
  • Familiarity with consultative decision-making processes and ability to adapt to changing situations and priorities.
  • Ability to work evenings and/or weekends and to travel, as required.
  • Ability to work effectively independently and within a team environment.
  • Experience with standard Microsoft Office and related technology.
  • Capability to work under tight time constraints in a high-volume environment with multiple priorities.
  • Understanding of and commitment to the principles, concerns, and considerations of AFSC regarding issues of race, class, nationality, religion, age, gender and sexual orientation, and disabilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work and communicate with diverse staff.

Responsibilities

  • Act as part of the representative team of the Religious Society of Friends at the United Nations, communicating Quaker insights, perspectives, and concerns.
  • Model inclusive, non-violent, and collaborative approaches in interactions with the UN community.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with key diplomats, UN staff, and NGO representatives.
  • Represent QUNO at relevant UN program-related meetings and meetings of Friends, Quaker service agencies, and AFSC.
  • Develop and implement work on QUNO program plans and entry points in collaboration with QUNO program partners, in accordance with the QUNO strategic plan.
  • Work collaboratively with the QUNO Director and other staff to identify key program entry points, and engage in regular monitoring and evaluation.
  • Liaise with QUNO Geneva, AFSC, FWCC, and other Quaker service agencies regarding QUNO program entry points.
  • Seek funding for program work in consultation with the Director and AFSC Development staff.
  • Oversee the QUNO Program Assistant program, including recruitment, hiring, and onboarding.
  • Lead QUNO outreach and engagement with Quaker Meetings, gatherings, schools, the QUNO alumni network, and other interested groups.
  • Coordinate visits and support staff in their outreach efforts to inform stakeholders about QUNO program work.
  • Serve as principal liaison between QUNO NY and other Quaker agencies to coordinate collaborative outreach activities.
  • Support and participate in QUNO advancement efforts, including drafting content for the QUNO website, social media, print materials, and participating in fundraising activities.
  • Supervise and mentor QUNO Program Assistants, Associates, or Fellows.
  • Participate in the recruitment, orientation, and training of new staff.
  • Regular attendance and punctuality.
