About The Position

The Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) Sonographer performs specialized obstetric and gynecologic ultrasound examinations to evaluate fetal growth, anatomy, maternal health, and high-risk pregnancies. Produces high-quality diagnostic images for interpretation by a Maternal-Fetal Medicine physician. Performs comprehensive fetal assessments using advanced ultrasound techniques while providing compassionate, patient-centered care. Under the direction of the Maternal-Fetal Medicine leadership team, the MFM Sonographer performs a variety of technical procedures assisting in the diagnosis, monitoring, and management of maternal and fetal conditions.

Requirements

• Graduate of an accredited Diagnostic Medical Sonography program (required).
• Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) (required).
• ARDMS certification in Obstetrics & Gynecology (OB/GYN) (required).
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (required).

Nice To Haves

• Associate degree from an accredited Allied Health Ultrasound Program (preferred).
• Fetal Echocardiography (FE) certification or eligibility (preferred).
• Minimum one (1) year of experience performing obstetric and gynecologic ultrasound examinations (preferred).
• Previous experience in Maternal-Fetal Medicine or high-risk obstetric ultrasound strongly preferred.
• Advanced knowledge of fetal, maternal, and pelvic anatomy and physiology.
• Proficient in performing detailed fetal anatomical surveys and advanced obstetric imaging.
• Knowledge of AIUM, ACOG, ISUOG, and SMFM imaging guidelines and standards.
• Ability to recognize fetal anomalies and maternal pathology requiring immediate physician notification.
• Excellent critical thinking, clinical judgment, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to prioritize workload and manage multiple high-risk patients efficiently.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills with physicians, patients, and multidisciplinary healthcare teams.
• Demonstrates compassion, professionalism, and emotional intelligence when caring for patients experiencing high-risk pregnancies or adverse fetal diagnoses.
• Builds collaborative relationships with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.

• Training EPIC Electronic Health Record (EHR) (preferred).
• Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) (preferred).
• Experience with advanced ultrasound platforms (GE Voluson, Philips, Siemens, or equivalent) preferred.
• Knowledge of 3D/4D obstetric imaging and advanced Doppler applications preferred.

Responsibilities

• Demonstrates knowledge of direct patient care by verifying patient identity, reviewing physician orders, medical history, prior imaging, laboratory results, and pregnancy-related information to ensure the appropriate examination is performed.
• Explains ultrasound procedures to patients and families while providing emotional support and education regarding high-risk pregnancy evaluations.
• Performs comprehensive obstetric and gynecologic ultrasound examinations including first-, second-, and third-trimester studies, fetal anatomy surveys, fetal growth assessments, biophysical profiles, cervical length measurements, amniotic fluid evaluations, placental assessments, fetal echocardiography assistance, Doppler studies (umbilical artery, middle cerebral artery, ductus venosus), and other specialized MFM examinations as indicated.
• Produces high-quality diagnostic images and measurements while recognizing normal and abnormal fetal, placental, and maternal anatomy.
• Documents sonographer observations and communicates urgent or unexpected findings promptly to the Maternal-Fetal Medicine physician.
• Ensures patient comfort, privacy, dignity, and safety throughout the examination while demonstrating sensitivity to patients experiencing complex or high-risk pregnancies.
• Maintains accurate documentation of imaging, measurements, patient history, and technical impressions in the electronic medical record and PACS.
• Assists physicians during ultrasound-guided procedures including amniocentesis.
• Demonstrates competency in recognizing fetal anomalies, maternal complications, multiple gestations, and other conditions requiring physician review.
• Performs high-level disinfection of transducers in accordance with Joint Commission, CDC, and infection prevention standards.
• Participates in quality assurance, performance improvement initiatives, accreditation activities, and regulatory compliance.
• Assists department in achieving successful outcomes during federal, state, and accreditation agency surveys.
• Participates in the education and clinical instruction of sonography students and new staff members.
• Promotes excellent patient experience and demonstrates professionalism while supporting the mission and values of the organization.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
