About The Position

This position involves performing diagnostic ultrasound procedures for patients of all age groups, from pediatric to geriatric. The role requires adherence to safety principles, effective communication, and efficient use of time. Responsibilities include utilizing hospital information systems, maintaining a safe and well-stocked work environment, and contributing to professional growth. The ultrasonographer will also assist physicians with special procedures, maintain sterile techniques, and support new employees. The position may involve portable procedures in high-stress areas and requires on-call responsibilities.

Requirements

  • Completion of a formal Ultrasound training program.
  • Proficiency in utilizing Hospital Information System (HIS), Radiology Information System (RIS) and PACS.
  • Knowledge of appropriate body mechanics and safety precautions for patient transport and movement.
  • Understanding of safe patient handling devices.
  • Ability to follow Universal Protocol using two patient identifiers.
  • Skill in evaluating patient's medical history and clinical data.
  • Competence in completing necessary paperwork and noting discrepancies.
  • Ability to determine and arrange for translation services or communication aides.
  • Proficiency in performing diagnostic ultrasound procedures.
  • Ability to perform portable procedures in high-stress environments.
  • Skill in acquisition and analysis of statistical data for non-invasive vascular procedures.
  • Knowledge of proper sterile techniques and aseptic practices.
  • Ability to follow cleaning and high-level disinfection procedures for semi-critical devices.
  • Willingness to assume On-Call responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Uses ALARA and safety principles at all times.

  • Answers telephone inquiries of a technical nature from physicians or hospital personnel in other areas of the hospital while maintaining good phone etiquette.
  • Maintains a safe working environment: Keeps work area clean and free of hazards.
  • Alerts appropriate resource of faulty or broken equipment.
  • Observes all safety guidelines.
  • Recognizes and reports unsafe acts.
  • Maintains appropriate stock of supplies for the department.
  • Assumes responsibility and accountability for own professional growth and practice including maintaining current licensure and completing educational requirements.
  • Understands his/her role in maintaining medication security to authorized personnel only.
  • Adheres to infection control guidelines: uses good handwashing technique, adheres to isolation policy, cleaning equipment between patients.
  • Assists student technologists who may rotate through the department.
  • Transports and moves patients using appropriate body mechanics and safety precautions.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and practice of safe patient handling devices.
  • Follows Universal Protocol by using two patient identifiers prior to working with patient.
  • Provides patient and family with information/instructions regarding procedure, evaluating barriers to understanding.
  • Evaluates patient’s medical history and clinical data.
  • Completes the necessary paperwork and notes discrepancies according to departmental procedure.
  • Determines need for translation services or communication aides and arranges for the appropriate resources to meet these needs.
  • Performs all clinical and diagnostic procedures for geriatric, adult, adolescent and pediatric patients according to department policy and procedure.
  • Performs diagnostic ultrasound procedures as outlined in the Department Policy and Procedure Manual.
  • Performs portable procedures in high stress environments includes Neonatal Intensive Care Nursery, Labor Room, Intensive Care Units, Surgery Suite and Emergency Room.
  • Performs acquisition and analysis of extensive statistical data compiled in non-invasive vascular procedures.
  • Assists physicians utilizing ultrasound in the performance of special procedures involving aspirations, biopsies and for guidance of needle placement procedures.
  • Maintains proper sterile techniques for procedures; regularly practices aseptic techniques and strictly obeys isolation and infection control procedures; prevents cross contamination during procedures.
  • Follows cleaning and high level disinfection of semi-critical devices, policy and procedures.
  • Assists and supports a new or transferred employee through a planned orientation.
  • Utilizes LEAN methodology to improve work flow processes for increased quality of patient care and improved outcomes.
  • Assumes On-Call responsibilities as assigned by Supervisor.
