About The Position

The Maryland Department of Labor (MD Labor), Division of Unemployment Insurance is seeking a qualified candidate for the position of UI Tax Accountant Professional III. This role will be responsible for performing a full range of accounting duties within the Wage Reporting and Accounting Unit, applying generally accepted accounting principles. The position involves examining, analyzing, and interpreting accounting systems, records, and reports, maintaining accounting systems, preparing financial reports, reviewing financial transactions, and assisting with policy and internal control development. Extensive knowledge of accounting principles, unemployment insurance programs, and federal and state unemployment insurance law is required.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor's degree in Accounting from an accredited college or university, or a Bachelor’s degree with 30 credit hours in accounting and/or related courses.
  • Three years of professional accounting experience or three years of experience examining, analyzing and interpreting accounting systems, records and reports by applying generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Personnel employed in this classification will have access to federal tax information and must undergo a state and FBI criminal background check as a condition of employment.
  • All candidates are subject to a background check against files maintained by the Division of Unemployment Insurance (MD Labor/DUI) to determine whether any monies are owed to MD Labor/DUI as a result of unemployment insurance overpayment/fraud.

Nice To Haves

  • 1 year experience reconciling banking statements and/or financial records.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Word
  • Strong written and oral communication experience.

Responsibilities

  • Examines, analyzes and interprets accounting systems, records and reports within Re-Employment BEACON system by applying generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Performs advanced level cost accounting, system accounting federal fund accounting to develop and implement detailed accounting systems not available in general accounting system.
  • Reviews and approves financial transactions specifically related to the Unemployment Insurance program.
  • Reviews and takes appropriate action on work items generated through the Re-Employment BEACON systems.
  • Maintains UI accounting systems and accounting records.
  • Prepares monthly reconciliations with bank records.
  • Reconciles the unemployment insurance clearing account subsidiary ledger, benefit account subsidiary ledger, and trust account subsidiary ledger to the bank statements and trust fund statement monthly. Any discrepancies that are found are resolved either with bank representatives or personnel from the Financial Transaction Unit.
  • Assists in gathering and supplying information to both internal and external auditors (including legislative auditors).
  • Prepares financial reports or statements and gives fiscal advice to UI management.
  • Participates in required training necessary to carry out job functions and to gain knowledge in Maryland’s Unemployment Insurance laws, regulations, and directives.
  • Participates in cross-training among them and may be called upon to provide support when a particular unit is operating under a deficiency.
