About The Position

The UE Testing Technician is responsible for applying knowledge of ultrasonic testing procedures to examine and requalify high-pressure gas cylinders. This role involves using testing equipment to perform non-destructive inspections with high-frequency sound waves to measure physical properties like thickness and to ensure material integrity. The technician will detect cracks, corrosion, or other conditions that may render a gas cylinder unsafe for use. The position requires proficiency in managing computer equipment and valve machines, working in alignment with specific standard operating procedures for testing, and using warehouse equipment like forklifts and pallet jacks to move gas cylinders. Maintaining and calibrating ultrasonic testing equipment, recording test results with high attention to detail, and stamping/labeling cylinders after testing are key duties. The role also involves reviewing and interpreting test results according to local, state, federal, and Department of Transportation (DOT) standards, and ensuring cylinders needing attention are removed from service. Additional tasks may include supporting the team with loading/unloading trucks, inventory, housekeeping, customer interactions, filling cylinders, and painting cylinders.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Completion of 40-hour Ultrasonic Testing training course & certification.
  • Demonstrated comfort with basic mathematical calculations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division).
  • Detail oriented with a focus on completing compliance documentation neatly and with high attention to detail.
  • Capacity to operate a fork-lift.
  • Capacity to manage physical tasks involving 25 – 75 lbs. routinely, and occasionally transport 76 to greater than 100 lbs. with the aid of material handling equipment.
  • Ability to move throughout manufacturing and/or office locations as needed.
  • Excellent communication skills, with an emphasis on active listening and exchanging information.
  • Comfortable observing and assessing information received via computer.
  • Proficiency with computers, telephones, and the operation of a fork-lift.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for interacting with customers and fellow Airgas associates.
  • Ability to contribute to a drug-free workplace.
  • Ability to work in varying weather conditions.
  • Flexibility to support the team with overtime as needed.

Nice To Haves

  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, and Outlook).
  • Prior experience utilizing SAP is a plus.
  • Mechanical aptitude and a familiarity with hand tools.

Responsibilities

  • Apply knowledge of ultrasonic testing procedures to examine and requalify high-pressure gas cylinders.
  • Perform non-destructive inspections using high-frequency sound waves to measure physical properties and ensure material integrity.
  • Detect cracks, corrosion, or other conditions in gas cylinders that may classify them as unsafe for use.
  • Examine gas cylinders to detect surface conditions and test the thickness of cylinder walls.
  • Manage computer equipment and valve machine (if applicable) to conduct testing.
  • Work in alignment with SP143130/ UE Standard Operating Procedures for testing to ensure safety and quality.
  • Use a forklift, pallet jack, and other warehouse equipment to safely move gas cylinders.
  • Maintain and support the care of ultrasonic testing equipment.
  • Calibrate and adjust ultrasonic testing equipment to meet necessary standards and settings.
  • Record test results, cylinder serial number, and test date with high attention to detail.
  • Stamp test date and label gas cylinders once ultrasonic testing is complete.
  • Review and interpret test results and documentation as it relates to local, state, and federal standards and Department of Transportation (DOT) guidelines.
  • Ensure that cylinders requiring attention, maintenance, or repair are removed from service until corrected.
  • Support the team with loading and unloading trucks and/or trailers.
  • Assist with inventory, general housekeeping, and fostering positive customer interactions.
  • Help with filling cylinders to proper pressure or weight.
  • Paint cylinders as needed.
