About The Position

The Dr. Julia N. Visor Academic Center, a division of University College, aims to support students in their transition to Illinois State University, helping them achieve their educational goals and reach their academic potential. The center offers various programs and services, including facilitated study groups, writing assistance, learning workshops, and developmental courses. As a tutor, you will provide individualized help to students, requiring you to be friendly, helpful, and an effective communicator. While tutoring is the primary responsibility, other tasks may be assigned by supervisors. Content tutors offer weekly small-group tutoring for introductory courses at Illinois State University. This is an applicant pool application, and applications will be reviewed mid-semester or as staffing needs arise.

Requirements

• Must have an overall GPA of at least 2.80.
• Must have received a grade of A or high B in the course(s) for which applying to tutor.
• Must be able to communicate effectively.
• Must be able to complete tasks with or without a reasonable accommodation.
• Must have a valid Social Security Number registered with the University at the time of employment or as soon as possible, but no later than 45 days from the start date.
• Must file an I-9 in person no later than three days from the beginning of employment.

Nice To Haves

• Proficiency in the subject area the candidate desires to tutor.
• Ability to convey knowledge clearly via spoken and written word.
• A GPA of 3.00 or higher.
• Additional courses in the subject area applied for.

Responsibilities

• Provide small-group tutoring on a weekly basis for lower-level courses.
• Offer help tailored to each student's needs.
• Perform other tasks as assigned by graduate assistant supervisors and the Coordinator of Academic Support Services.
