About The Position

Under the general supervision of the Building and Grounds Supervisor, the Turf Maintenance Technician II is responsible for the care and routine preventive maintenance of campus lawn spaces. This role includes completing minor repairs on grounds equipment and supporting landscape construction projects, which may involve reading landscape plans or design instructions. The position also sets up and maintains temporary irrigation systems as needed throughout campus. Key responsibilities include turf fertilization, pest management, and accurate record‑keeping related to these applications. The role also covers lawn treatments such as herbicides, fertilizers, compost applications, and aeration for both campus and off‑site locations. The Turf Maintenance Technician II helps establish new lawn areas through seeding and sodding and assists with mowing as needed. This position is essential to maintaining and watering campus lawn spaces—primarily with hose‑end sprinkler applications—and plays a critical role in winter snow removal on the UW–Madison campus. Ongoing/Renewable Full-Time: 100% FTE Hours generally scheduled Monday- Friday, 7:00am- 3:30pm. Occasional nights, weekends and holidays may be required for this position. Work is performed onsite.

Requirements

  • Two (2) years of experience performing grounds, landscape, turf, or outdoor maintenance work with evidence of growing responsibility or skill development.
  • Valid driver’s license that meets UW–Madison Risk Management requirements, with a safe driving record.
  • Ability to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with tanker and air brake endorsements within six (6) months of hire.
  • Ability to obtain a Commercial Category 3.0 Turf & Landscape Applicator’s Certification within six (6) months of hire.
  • We offer training opportunities and allow work time to prepare for and complete the exam.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with commercial or institutional snow removal operations.
  • Experience using or maintaining grounds or lawn care equipment, or demonstrated mechanical aptitude to learn equipment maintenance.

Responsibilities

  • Assists trades, crafts, vendors, and technical staff with construction, design, and operational maintenance as needed
  • Responsible for turf fertilization and pest management across campus, including maintaining accurate records of all related activities
  • Utilizes equipment to repair and maintain standard machinery, equipment, and facility property to prevent further damage and ensure optimal operation
  • Troubleshoots, escalates, and documents issues according to established policies and procedures
  • Receives, inspects, inventories, and distributes deliveries to appropriate entities under general supervision
  • Performs routine facility inspections and monitors cleanliness
  • Turf maintenance tasks such as overseeding, irrigation care, and general turf repairs
  • Snow removal for campus
