The Tunnel Maintainer position with the Department of Transportation offers a hands-on role that keeps travelers moving safely. This job lets you take charge of important maintenance activities that support smooth traffic flow. You will help keep tunnel systems clean, functional, and ready for daily use. Requirements

  • Two years of experience in roadway maintenance and repair, emergency services, towing and roadside assistance, or traffic control work; or An equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Possession of an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations.
  • Demonstrate successful operation of equipment with a manual transmission.
  • Possess an active Pennsylvania Class A Commercial Driver’s License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) removed, or equivalent on their first day of employment.
  • Obtain within the probationary period an active certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in the operation of heavy trucks and loaders.
  • Obtain additional certifications issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation on assigned pieces of equipment during the probationary period.
  • Able to perform essential job functions.

Responsibilities

  • Clean drainage systems, mow grounds, remove debris, and maintain tunnel structures and facilities
  • Assist motorists, remove hazards, tow vehicles, and restore normal traffic flow during emergencies
  • Observe tunnels for traffic issues, CO levels, fires, and over height vehicles
  • Use towing devices, wash trucks, pressure washers, and other tools needed for tunnel upkeep
  • Deploy cones, signs, and crash trucks to safely close lanes during maintenance activities
  • Follow safety procedures, complete inspections, and report unsafe conditions to supervisors
