The TSC Police Sergeant is a first-line patrol supervisor position that assists and supports the Police Lieutenant in every phase of the Department’s operations, thereby enhancing the success of its mission. Requirements

  • A high school diploma or its equivalent
  • Met the requirements of Chapter 943, Florida Statutes for certification as a Florida law enforcement officer
  • Four (4) years of experience in sworn law enforcement; or a combination of education and/or experience

Responsibilities

  • Assists and supports the Lieutenant in every phase of the Department’s operations to enhance the success of its mission.
  • Serves in the absence of the Lieutenant if necessary and is responsible for the duties associated with the Lieutenant’s role.
  • Represents the Department on College committees and at meetings directed by the Lieutenant or the Chief of Police.
  • Acts as liaison with national, state, county, and local law enforcement agencies and assists in directing Community-Oriented Policing on the college campus.
  • Assists in planning and administering the law enforcement and security activities for the Tallahassee State College Police Department. This includes the satellite facilities in the surrounding counties.
  • Assists in maintaining and/or overseeing the scheduling and staffing for all law enforcement and security-related functions or requests.
  • Responsibilities include criminal and traffic accident investigation and enforcement, personnel administration, policy development, and program administration.
  • Mentors and develops law enforcement personnel responsible for life and property protection, crime and misconduct prevention, traffic and crowd control, criminal and traffic law enforcement, criminal and traffic accident investigations, and community service.
  • Ensures the quality of service rendered by subordinates and the delivery of police services in accordance with Department and college policies.
  • Evaluates the subordinates who are direct reports to this position.
  • Reviews reports and other submitted paperwork for accuracy and competency in criminal and cases referred to student conduct.
  • Assumes responsibility for viewing incident reports for correct content and grammar.
  • Assists the Lieutenant with staffing allocation and recommendations.
  • Encourages suggestions from both sworn and non-sworn personnel regarding improvements of current rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Coordinates and cooperates with other staff and personnel in the development of procedures to improve operations, technology, morale, discipline, training, and other functions necessary to improve the efficiency of the Department.
  • Assists in conducting inspections on uniform officers and their understanding of compliance with Departmental policies and procedures regarding uniform wear, fair and impartial application of policy with all faculty, staff, students, and visitors on campus, and the Canons of police Ethics.
  • Assists in conducting continuous analysis of crime to determine the location, time, special characteristics, similarities to other criminal activity, and identify any patterns of behavior to implement corrective countermeasures.
  • May be assigned specific program or project management and/or support duties and responsibilities based upon agency need.
  • Assists the Lieutenant and Chief with the development and implementation of process improvements within the agency.
  • Coaches and mentors members to improve their performance and set their individual goals.
  • Pursues, apprehends, and arrests law violators or suspected law violators.
  • Conducts surveys and interviews with persons in the College community to ensure the availability of information in anticipation of future demands on police and security services.
  • Responds to citizen complaints and, when deemed appropriate, conducts Internal Affairs investigations.
  • Assumes primary supervisory responsibility for follow-up investigations being conducted by officers on campus.
  • Assists the Lieutenant with administrative duties associated with complaints against department members.
  • Maintains competence in areas of police skills such as firearms, first responder, interpersonal skills, arrest procedures, and use of specialized police equipment.
  • Continue to learn and assist with the implementation of changes as it relates to the Policies and Procedures of the Department.
  • Attend training to enhance law enforcement skills.
  • Enhance officer report writing outputs and documentation of work through CAD with emphasis on building checks.
  • Qualify with departmentally approved firearms.
  • Maintain training records for all department personnel.
  • Make sure the training is up to date for purposes of current relevance and to maintain certifications required by Florida CJST.
  • Conducts interviews for vacancies within the department as instructed and conducts statutorily required background checks on newly hired members.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned and deemed necessary.
