About The Position

The University of Montana invites applications for a TRIO Coordinator. The TRIO Coordinator plays a vital role in supporting approximately 125 TRIO participants as they navigate their college experience and work toward their academic and career goals. This position provides individualized guidance, coordinates comprehensive program services, and serves as a key advocate for students who are low-income, first-generation, and/or students with disabilities. As an integral member of the TRIO team, the Coordinator helps students persist and succeed in college, maintain good academic standing, graduate, and, when applicable, pursue graduate or professional education.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a behavioral or social sciences, education, communication, or related field.
  • Two (2) years of work experience in a Student Services related field, preferably in a university setting.
  • One (1) year of experience in advising/coaching/mentoring disadvantaged students, preferably in a higher education setting.
  • Knowledge or background in curriculum development and classroom instruction.
  • Experience hiring, training and supervising employees.
  • Knowledge of academic advising and course selection, financial aid, scholarships and the FAFSA application process, and strategies for student retention and success.
  • Ability to advise/coach and mentor students and provide support for developing academic skills while also addressing non-academic issues or concerns.
  • Understanding of marginalized students and willingness to serve as an ally for a more inclusive campus environment.
  • Knowledge of differing backgrounds and the skill to create an inviting and safe environment.
  • Understanding of the current issues and trends in student affairs and student development.
  • Practices for promoting student engagement and connection to the college.
  • Knowledge of a variety of software platforms (Microsoft apps), database management systems and social media communications.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge and/or experience in planning and implementing workshops or activities.

  • Experience in TRIO projects, or programs with similar goals and objectives.
  • Knowledge of university degree programs, advising/coaching students, financial aid processes, career information, and effective strategies for project recruitment and retention.

Responsibilities

  • Assist students with academic planning, course selection, degree audits, registration, and progress toward degree completion.
  • Support students in exploring career and educational opportunities, including graduate and professional programs.
  • Provide guidance and referrals related to personal concerns, financial aid, financial literacy, and other academic and non-academic student needs.
  • Monitor student progress and provide proactive outreach, encouragement, and interventions to promote persistence, retention, and good academic standing.
  • Coordinate the Peer Mentoring Program, including recruiting, hiring, training, supervising, and evaluating Peer Mentors.
  • Develop and teach curriculum for COLS 160: Learning Strategies in Higher Education and COLS 391: Introduction to Peer Mentoring.
  • Teach additional courses as needed, which may include COLS 194: Freshmen Seminar and COLS 392: College to Career Readiness.
  • Collaborate with campus partners and TRIO staff to connect students with resources and services that support their academic and personal success.
  • Maintain accurate student records and documentation related to advising, academic progress, program participation, and grant requirements.
  • Contribute to program activities, assessment, reporting, and grant objectives to ensure effective delivery of TRIO services.
