David M. Werwie & Associates, insurance staff counsel for State Farm Insurance Companies, is seeking an attorney to join its St. Paul, Minnesota Claim Litigation office. The attorney owns their cases, participates in litigation events, and meets with clients. Attorneys work collaboratively, can assist one another, and have access to support staff while retaining ownership of their files. Because attorneys are not billed by the hour, they can focus on trial strategy and case development throughout litigation. The position is hybrid, requiring time in the office and virtual work; arrangements may change based on business needs. Travel to job-related activities using personal or commercial transportation is an essential function, and irregular hours may be required. The role involves handling litigation and other legal assignments under Law Department guidelines, preparing and summarizing reports for proceedings, developing trial strategy and cases, and attending trials, mediations, depositions, and hearings. Candidates need first-chair jury trial experience and 3–10 years of litigation experience, preferably in insurance defense, medical malpractice, personal injury, or workers’ compensation. A J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school, an active Minnesota law license, and good standing with the State Bar of Minnesota are required. Applicants must be eligible to work lawfully in the United States immediately; State Farm will not sponsor applicants. Except for authorized and pro bono work, State Farm attorneys may not handle legal business outside State Farm and must end outside practice and suit involvement before joining. The potential starting salary is $129,500–$175,000, based on skills, background, and experience; the high end is limited to applicants with significant relevant experience. Potential yearly incentive pay has a 16% target and a maximum potential of 24%.
