About The Position

This position is responsible for supervising a crew in the maintenance of trees on city property. The role involves supervising, training, and evaluating employees, as well as inspecting and maintaining vehicles and equipment. The Crew Leader trains personnel in the operation of a bucket truck, chipper, and chipper truck, and is responsible for pruning and removing trees, and operating a chipper. Additionally, the role involves training and supervising personnel in safety procedures and tree trimming/removal techniques, flagging traffic, and ensuring the safe passage of vehicles and pedestrians through the work site. The position also requires responding to citizen questions, preparing and reviewing work orders, and evaluating incident and accident reports. The Crew Leader must respond to emergency situations as needed and may be subject to on-call hours. Other related duties are assigned as needed.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of training and supervisory techniques.
  • Knowledge of the roads and area of the Columbus Consolidated Government.
  • Knowledge of the techniques of tree pruning and removal.
  • Knowledge of department policies and procedures.
  • Skill in the operation of light and heavy equipment including chippers, saws, blowers, bucket trucks, flatbeds, and dump trucks.
  • Skill in interpersonal relations.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Completion of specialized training in the occupational field, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
  • Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions and to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three years experience or service.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid commercial driver's license (CDL) issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

Responsibilities

  • Responds to citizen questions.
  • Prepares work orders and daily worksheets; reviews work orders daily to ensure completion.
  • Evaluates incident and accident reports.
  • Responds to emergency situations as needed and may be subject to on call hours.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
