About The Position

A Maintenance Worker in Public Works performs general manual work and semi-skilled labor to maintain the City’s right-of-way areas. Depending on the area assigned, this position is generally responsible for the maintenance, repair, and upkeep of City grounds, streets, sidewalks, stormwater drainage systems and other City facilities, performing duties such as mowing, trimming, debris removal, sidewalk and curb maintenance, and assisting with stormwater drainage systems. The position ensures that public spaces remain safe, clean, and accessible for residents and visitors. This position is designated as “essential personnel” and may serve as a member of the Emergency Management Team, required to report for duty during emergencies, natural disasters, or other critical events.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of grounds maintenance and general maintenance tasks and procedures.
  • Knowledge of methods and procedures related to the installation, maintenance and repair of streets, sidewalks, curbing, drainage systems, meters and underdrains.
  • The ability to perform heavy manual labor under adverse weather conditions.
  • Skilled in the operation and maintenance of equipment and tools related to the position.
  • Knowledge of and skill in the use of common hand tools and mechanical equipment.
  • Ability to operate light and heavy equipment safely and effectively, including bucket and clam trucks.
  • The ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and written.
  • Capable of following written and oral instructions.
  • Working knowledge of safety rules and regulations.
  • Ability to deal courteously and effectively with the public and co-workers.
  • Knowledge of basic mathematics.
  • Ability to access, input and retrieve information from a computer.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Must possess a valid Florida's driver's license.
  • Ability to climb ladders, enter confined spaces, and work on uneven terrain or in trenches.

Nice To Haves

  • Two (2) years of related manual labor and/or groundskeeping experience is preferred.
  • Experience with Public Works maintenance is preferred.
  • Experience using heavy equipment is preferred.
  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL) preferred, or the ability to obtain a CDL within six (6) months is required.

Responsibilities

  • Operate specialized vehicles and equipment including a bucket truck and clam truck for tree trimming, debris removal, and other ROW maintenance tasks.
  • Use hand and power tools to clear vegetation and debris.
  • Assist with the installation and repair of signs, fences, and other ROW infrastructure.
  • Support storm preparation and cleanup efforts, including sandbagging and debris removal.
  • Respond to work orders, citizen concerns, and emergency maintenance requests.
  • Assist other departments or crews as needed.
  • Maintains equipment and tools.
  • Conduct pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections.
  • Maintain city-owned right-of-way areas including medians, road shoulders, sidewalks, and easements.
  • Operate and maintain equipment such as mowers, weed trimmers, blowers, chainsaws, and hand tools.
  • Remove litter, debris, and vegetation from roadways, sidewalks, and drainage areas.
  • Performs general concrete and asphalt repair utilizing hand and power tools.
  • Constructs concrete forms, mixes and pours concrete (sidewalks, curbs, driveways, aprons etc.).
  • Perform minor concrete patching on sidewalks, curbs, aprons, etc.
  • Perform minor asphalt patching on roadways and potholes.
  • Inspect concrete and asphalt surfaces for cracks, wear, or damage.
  • Perform routine maintenance and repairs to extend the life of concrete and asphalt structures.
  • Operate light to heavy equipment such as skid steers, backhoes, and concrete saws.
  • Performs general inspection, maintenance, and repair of city stormwater systems to include cleaning, excavation, repair, replacement and inspection of pipes, manholes, culverts, ditches, creeks and inlet and outlet structures.
  • Remove debris, sediment, and blockages to ensure proper water flow and prevent flooding.
  • Operate and maintain light to heavy equipment such as vacuum trucks, backhoes, mini-excavators, and dump trucks.
  • Use hand and power tools for digging, cutting, and clearing vegetation or debris.
  • Conduct visual inspections of stormwater systems and report issues such as erosion, illicit discharges, or structural damage.
  • Design and produce traffic, street, and informational signs using vinyl cutters, screen printing, or digital printing equipment.
  • Apply reflective sheeting and lettering to sign blanks.
  • Install new signs on streets, highways, and public buildings.
  • Inspect, clean, repair, or replace damaged or faded signs.
  • Ensure signs meet local, state, and federal regulations (e.g., MUTCD standards in the U.S.).
  • Use GIS or asset management systems to update sign locations and conditions.
