About The Position

This position is responsible for general supervision of residents and their activities, milieu management, and facilitation of group meetings. Additionally, this position may serve as an assistant to the Adventure Therapist or as a primary counselor for a limited number of Pathways inpatients. As an assistant to the Adventure Therapist, the employee will be provided with applicable training and certification. As a primary counselor, the employee will provide assessment, case management, counseling, collaborative treatment planning, and discharge planning to adults with primary substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders. Our treatment philosophy is based on evidence-based practices and multiple pathways to recovery; all staff collaborate to provide a treatment environment of learning, growth, and individualized clinical interventions to foster patient success.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Current approval as an Alcohol and Drug Trainee (ADT) from the Maryland Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists or Maryland certification as a Peer Recovery Coach is required.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the approved Luminis Health system is required within 30 days of hire.
  • Driver’s license and driving record with no more than two points.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with all types of disciplines and personalities while maintaining a positive and healthful work environment.
  • Display personal attributes of compassion, integrity, honesty, and a willingness to engage in critical self-appraisal.
  • Demonstrate ability to balance initiative and working independently while accepting feedback and direction.

Nice To Haves

  • AA or BA/BS degree in a human services field is preferred.
  • One year of work experience in behavioral health; individual and/or group counseling and residential treatment experience preferred.
  • For TA/CM detailed to Adventure Therapy, Challenge Course Technology certification will be required within 6 months ( provided by the agency).

Responsibilities

  • Provides supervision and support for patients and their activities.
  • Provides supervision of the resident environment and activities, including clarifying and reminding of program guidelines and rules.
  • May conduct searches and drug tests according to program standards as needed.
  • Orients new patients on treatment expectations and patient rights and responsibilities.
  • Transports patient to and from groups, breaks, meals, and outside appointments as needed.
  • Under supervision, provides inpatients assigned with assessment, treatment planning, case management, counseling, discharge planning, and linkage to the appropriate level of care and/or community resources.
  • Conducts individual counseling sessions by level of care while establishing a therapeutic alliance and maintaining effective working relationships with patients.
  • Determine patient strengths; integrate the patient’s expressed goals and measurement-based care into treatment planning, including achievable steps with specified target dates, and document and recognize progress.
  • Facilitate psychoeducational and/or therapeutic groups as assigned and may be responsible for group coverage due to a vacancy or absence.
  • Demonstrates basic knowledge of ASAM, DSM V criteria, Evidence-Based Practices, and medications used in substance use treatment, relative to the assessment, reassessment, and treatment of patient needs throughout the episode of care, while working to increase knowledge.
  • Maintains chart documentation under supervision, in accordance with Joint Commission, COMAR, Luminis Health, and Pathways’ requirements.
  • Collaborates with other Pathways Counselors to manage emergent and complex patient problems, concerns, or other issues, including cross-coverage of patients assigned to other counselors and cognitive-behavioral interventions to effect patient change as needed, in collaboration with clinical staff as needed.
  • Participate in clinical and multidisciplinary team meetings and supervision, as well as in-service and other assigned training.
  • Work collaboratively with patients and multidisciplinary teams, under supervision, to provide care to each patient based on their unique needs, strengths, values, and preferences.
  • For TACM detailed to Adventure Therapy, assist Pathways Adventure Therapist in delivery of Adventure Therapy challenge course as assigned.
  • Assist or deliver Adventure Therapy to patients along with management-approved groups such as paramedics, police and other public safety groups, as assigned.
  • Assist in maintenance and safety inspections of equipment and grounds as assigned.
  • Maintain staff and course certifications as assigned.
  • Pathways provides multiple levels of care; every staff member plays a role in our patients’ success, and staff may be asked to work in other areas of admission or treatment as needed.
