Travel CDL HDD Operator
About The Position
FiberTel, LLC, a subsidiary of Quanta Services, Inc., is a utility construction company specializing in fiber optics installation, serving the Northwest and Western regions including Utah, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, Nevada, and California. The company supports economic growth by ensuring uninterrupted internet service through the construction and installation of fiber optics, especially with the increased demand from remote work and online education. FiberTel offers a full turnkey experience for its clients. This specific role is for an HDD Operator based in Sacramento, CA, but involves travel to Sacramento, Vallejo, and Santa Rosa. The successful candidate will be a specially trained expert in locating for horizontal/directional drill rigs and product support equipment. Primary responsibilities include setting up and completing drilling of variable-sized underground bore holes and pulling back required conduit/pipe. The operator will be responsible for running various directional drilling equipment such as Directional Drills (Vermeer and/or Ditch Witch), Vac. Trucks, Mud Trucks, Excavators, Forklifts, Dump trucks, and Locators.
Requirements
- Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check.
- Possess a valid driver’s license or be eligible and willing to obtain the required license for the position.
- A good driving record is required.
- Basic knowledge of and ability to operate various types of utility trucks and equipment in a safe manner.
- Basic knowledge of and ability to hand tools and equipment in a safe manner.
- Ability to communicate effectively with customers, employees, etc.
- Willing and able to work in all weather conditions.
- Able to lift/carry 50 lbs regularly and up to 100 lbs as needed with or without assistance.
Nice To Haves
- Rock experience is a major plus.
- Class A Commercial Driver’s License is a plus (Higher wage scales apply to CDL holders).
- Previous construction experience, preferably in the telecommunication industry.
- Knowledge of established Horizontal/Directional Drill Locator/ Operator procedures and techniques.
- Ability to perform Horizontal/Directional Drill Locator/ Operator procedures and duties.
- Ability to travel.
Responsibilities
- All phases of telecommunication construction include but are not limited to: Loading, driving, delivery, digging, removal and placement of various types, sizes and weight of construction materials and equipment.
- Locate for Horizontal Directional Drill for installation of underground conduit and fiber optic cable.
- Ensure safety of the public and other utilities underground facilities.
- Operate Horizontal Directional Drill.
- Assist in potholing and remediation.
- Assist with setting hand holes and completing tie-ins.
- Ability to Read and Comprehend utility locates.
- Set equipment up including the drill, water tanks and grounding the machine.
- Ability to properly formulate and mix drilling mud for the site conditions.
- Ability to perform proper reaming and pull back methods for existing conditions.
- Oversee laborers and/or crew members work and monitor time usage.
- Ability to properly clean and maintain the equipment, check fluid levels, and conduct a visual inspection of vehicle/equipment to assure your vehicle/equipment is performing at optimum safety, perform the required pre-trip, post trip inspections and the required reports, perform needed maintenance including winterizing equipment.
- Communicates with Supervisor daily to turn in required reports (i.e. Bore log, vehicle maintenance reports, crew time logs etc.).
- Follows specifications for the job and company policies.
- Complies with safety procedures on and off the project site.
