About The Position

FiberTel, LLC, a fully owned subsidiary of Quanta Services, Inc., is a utility construction company specializing in the installation of fiber optics across Utah, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, Nevada, and California. The company plays a crucial role in supporting economic growth by ensuring uninterrupted internet service, especially given the increased demand from remote work and online education. FiberTel offers a comprehensive turnkey experience for its clients. This specific role is for an HDD Operator based in Springville, UT. A successful HDD Operator is a specially trained expert in locating for horizontal/directional drill rigs and product support equipment. The primary responsibilities include the setup and completion of drilling variable-sized underground boreholes and the subsequent pulling back of required pipe. This individual will be proficient in operating a variety of directional drilling equipment, such as Directional Drills (Vermeer and/or Ditch Witch), Vac. Trucks, Mud Trucks, Excavators, Forklifts, Dump trucks, and Locators. The position includes opportunities for travel, with higher wages offered to those holding a CDL A license.

Requirements

  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license or be eligible and willing to obtain the required license for the position.
  • A good driving record is required.
  • Basic knowledge of and ability to operate various types of utility trucks and equipment in a safe manner.
  • Basic knowledge of and ability to hand tools and equipment in a safe manner.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with customers, employees, etc.
  • Willing and able to work in all weather conditions.
  • Able to lift/carry 50 lbs regularly and up to 100 lbs as needed with or without assistance

Nice To Haves

  • Class A Commercial Driver’s License is a plus (Higher wage scales apply to CDL holders).
  • Previous construction experience, preferably in the telecommunication industry.
  • Knowledge of established Horizontal/Directional Drill Locator/ Operator procedures and techniques.
  • Ability to perform Horizontal/Directional Drill Locator/ Operator procedures and duties.
  • Ability to travel.

Responsibilities

  • All phases of telecommunication construction include but are not limited to: Loading, driving, delivery, digging, removal and placement of various types, sizes and weight of construction materials and equipment.
  • Locate for Horizontal Directional Drill for installation of underground pipe.
  • Ensure safety of the public and other utilities underground facilities.
  • Operate Horizontal Directional Drill
  • Assist in potholing and remediation.
  • Assist with setting hand holes and completing tie-ins.
  • Ability to Read and Comprehend utility locates.
  • Set equipment up including the drill, water tanks and grounding the machine.
  • Ability to properly formulate and mix drilling mud for the site conditions.
  • Ability to perform proper reaming and pull back methods for existing conditions.
  • Oversee laborers and/or crew members work and monitor time usage.
  • Ability to properly clean and maintain the equipment, check fluid levels, and conduct a visual inspection of vehicle/equipment to assure your vehicle/equipment is performing at optimum safety, perform the required pre-trip, post trip inspections and the required reports, perform needed maintenance including winterizing equipment.
  • Communicates with Supervisor daily to turn in required reports (i.e. Bore log, vehicle maintenance reports, crew time logs etc.)
  • Follows specifications for the job and company policies.
  • Complies with safety procedures on and off the project site.
  • Strive for optimal production while working safely and performing quality work.
