About The Position

A Trauma Registrar Senior is responsible for the collection, entry, and maintenance of data for the Trauma Center as required by the American College of Surgeons, and the Virginia Office of Emergency Medical Services. The registrar will code each injury related admission utilizing the ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and the Abbreviated Injury Scaling systems. This data, along with other state and nationally required data elements will be entered into the computerized trauma registry, maintaining strict confidentiality at all times. The Trauma Registrar II position serves as a resource for the Trauma Registrar I, and for the entire trauma program, understanding the trauma registrar data, and producing and analyzing reports to support internal performance improvement and research. The Trauma Registrar Senior will verify data and submit to state and national benchmarking programs.

  • 2 years of experience as a trauma registrar
  • 2 years healthcare and medical record experience

  • AAAM AIS 2015 Certification
  • Trauma Registry Course Certification
  • ICD-10 Trauma Injury Coding Certification required every 5 years
  • Certified Specialist in Trauma Registries (CSTR) or Certified Abbreviated Injury Scaling Specialist (CAISS) preferred - CAISS must be obtained within 2 years of hire

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for overseeing trauma registry activity and meeting the requirements of the Virginia Trauma Designation process
  • Responsible for ensuring accurate submissions in a timely manner
  • Assists with compilation, preparation, and presentation of requirements for ACS and state trauma level 1 verification reviews
  • Runs complex reports for internal and external requests for research, and performance improvement.
  • Responsible for training of new employees and overseeing monthly registrar education
  • Accurately identifies all patients for inclusion into the trauma registry, utilizing multiple source for complete patient identification.
  • Responsible for following all policies and procedures associated with the coding classification schemes to assign diagnostic and procedural codes to the trauma patient population
  • Enters a limited data set for all patients into the trauma program’s Admit List, on a daily basis. This is a multifaceted tool utilized by all members of the trauma program.
  • Maintains the EPIC Trauma Patient List, which is utilized by the Social Work Department. This list identifies trauma patients requiring Brief Alcohol Intervention, as mandated by the American College of Surgeons for verified Level I Trauma Centers.
  • Accurately abstracts, enters and validates all hospital, state and nationally required data elements into the computerized trauma registry.
  • Utilizing appropriate coding systems, accurately assigns E-codes, diagnostic, and procedure codes (ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, Abbreviated Injury Scale).
  • Utilizing national data element definitions for the current abstraction year, accurately abstracts pre-existing conditions, and hospital events. These elements are used for the Level I Trauma Center Risk Adjusted Benchmarking reports.
  • Monitors and maintains the security of trauma registry data to ensure the integrity and reliability of the data.
  • Complete at least 8 hours of trauma registrar related continuing education per year.
