The Transporter for the Radiology Department is responsible for transporting patients safely and effectively by wheelchair or stretcher using side rails, safety straps and locks as appropriate. This role requires exercising caution with regards to IV lines, pumps, monitors, oxygen tanks, and other medical devices. The transporter will train on and utilize lifting or transporting aides (i.e. Arjo lift). They will recognize equipment or patient problems and bring them to the attention of the nurse, technologist, or physician as appropriate. The transporter will observe/monitor the patient for comfort, safety, mental and physical status while transporting and while in other department areas, alerting the nurse, technologist, or physician of any patient problems or concerns. Providing for patient confidentiality, discretion, and diplomacy is essential, as is interacting effectively with patients of all age groups and maintaining clinical competency in job responsibilities as evidenced by annual completion of competency for Transporters. Adherence to hospital policies and procedures, standards, and protocols is required to ensure effective hospital operations and quality patient care. The role also involves maintaining a safe environment for patients, personnel and visitors by requiring and supporting the establishment, maintenance, and education of an effective safety management program. Adherence to radiation safety practices for patients, personnel and self, including principles of time, distance and shielding where possible, is necessary. Practices proper safety practices when transporting for MRI including utilization of MR safe transportation. The transporter will perform functions as directed to assist and support the hospital staff as they focus on the exam of the patients. They will greet and escort patients to imaging department rooms with appropriate dress and valuables secured in a safe place. Participation in Performance Improvement activities for Temecula Valley Hospital is expected, demonstrating the knowledge and ability to meet age specific needs of the patient groups identified under the Age Specific Standards.
