This position is located in the Cumberland County Maintenance Unit. Requirements

  • Must be able to legally operate Class A CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions.
  • Must have a Tanker (N) endorsement at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date.
  • Either possession of a current Commercial Driver's License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver's License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
  • Pre-employment drug testing is required.
  • Must complete and sign a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.
  • Safety toe footwear required.
  • Successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.
  • High school or General Educational Development diploma and (6) six years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of Intermediate Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety policy and practices.
  • Experience in shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation, or asphalt patching.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and train others in equipment operations; as well as directing the daily activities of a work crew.
  • Experience in snow and ice removal operations.
  • Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer, or sweeper.

Responsibilities

  • Operate various pieces of equipment including bulldozer, excavator, backhoe, skid steer, tandem dump truck, front end loader, tractor trailer, lee boy asphalt maintainer, motor grader, rollers, and other pieces as needed on the various crews.
  • Serve as a lead worker of a highway maintenance crew.
  • Carry out complete oral and written instructions.
  • Install traffic control and erosion control devices.
  • Perform roadway grading and machine unpaved roads.
  • Conduct pavement repair and pipe installation.
  • Perform manual tree and brush removal, debris and litter removal.
  • Engage in snow plowing, spreading salt, and salt brine application.
  • Operate brine plant.
  • Perform basic computer and iPad functions.
  • Work in all types of weather conditions such as ice, snow, difficult terrain, dust, extreme heat and cold, high volumes of traffic and heavy construction equipment.
  • Work on uneven surfaces and slopes.
  • Be subject to emergency callback and scheduled night work during adverse weather or other circumstances.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Work in outside and inside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, and oils.
  • Utilize visual acuity.
