About The Position

This is a Transportation Worker II position located in the Rowan County Maintenance Unit. The role involves a wide range of progressively responsible tasks in the preventive maintenance, repair, and construction of state-maintained roads in Rowan County. The employee will operate at least two pieces of equipment regularly, including but not limited to backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer, or sweeper. Responsibilities include performing semi-skilled and skilled maintenance tasks such as hauling asphalt, aggregate or soil materials, plowing snow, spreading salt, compacting asphalt and embankments, sweeping roads, loading ditching material, and disposing of roadside debris. The work also includes installation of traffic and erosion control devices, clearing of right of way, roadway grading, machining unpaved roads, pavement repair, pipe installation or other drainage tasks, inspecting contract work, and monitoring manual tasks. Emergency response duties include traffic accident clean-up, snow and ice removal, and other emergencies. This position is subject to emergency callback and scheduled night work during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances. The employee must be able to act upon both verbal and written communication and may perform other assigned duties. Employees at this level may train and operate equipment associated with a higher-level position.

Requirements

  • High school or General Educational Development diploma and three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to act upon both verbal and written communication.
  • Safety toe footwear is required.
  • Working knowledge of the principals involved in the operation and use of the equipment assigned.
  • Ability to perform assigned tasks and to follow oral and written instructions as directed by supervisor.
  • Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs., climb, bend, traverse steep and uneven terrain, and work in extreme temperature conditions.
  • Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time and operate equipment that vibrates.
  • Ability to safely use and care for assigned equipment, hand, & power tools.
  • Ability to perform manual maintenance duties and other duties as directed by supervisor.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age to transport inmates.
  • Must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date.
  • Possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR obtain the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License within 360 days of hire date.

Nice To Haves

  • Working knowledge of standard road maintenance and construction procedures.
  • Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer, or sweeper.
  • Experience in one of the following: pipe installation, installation of erosion control devices, snow and ice removal, ditch maintenance or asphalt patching.
  • Experience in snow and ice removal operations.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive maintenance, repair, and construction of state-maintained roads.

  • Clear right of way.

  • Inspect contract work and monitor manual tasks performed.
  • Respond to emergencies including traffic accident clean-up, snow and ice removal.
  • Train and operate equipment associated with a higher-level position.
  • Operate chain saws, shovel, drive trucks, and perform litter pickup.
  • Transport inmates for work detail, requiring an inmate card and background check.
