About The Position

This Position functions as a Level 2 Transportation Worker within the Forsyth County Maintenance Unit. Work will consist of manual and equipment operational work in the maintenance of highways in Forsyth County. Work will include operating various types of highway equipment such as a patch truck, dump truck, sweeper, roller, and skid steer. Work also includes installing traffic control devices, installing temporary erosion control devices, flagging traffic, crack sealing, asphalt patching, installing pipe culverts, operating hand and power tools, monitoring tasks performed by inmates, clearing right of way and responding to emergencies such as snow and ice removal, downed trees, traffic control cleanup, etc. during normal business hours or during emergency call situations and scheduled night work.

Requirements

  • Must be able to effectively communicate the English language.
  • Safety-toed shoes required.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age to transport inmates.
  • Must legally operate a motor vehicle.
  • Possession of a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker (N) endorsement, OR obtain the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
  • Pre-employment drug testing will be required.
  • Completion and signing of a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) allowing NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substance and alcohol testing.
  • High school or General Educational Development diploma and three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Working knowledge of Work Zone Safety and Workplace safety policies.
  • Working knowledge of standard road maintenance and construction procedures.
  • Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer, or sweeper.
  • Experience in one of the following: pipe installation, installation of erosion control devices, snow and ice removal, ditch maintenance or asphalt patching.
  • Experience in snow and ice removal operations.
