About The Position

This posting is for a Transportation Worker Level 3 in the Forsyth County Maintenance Unit. Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in the preventive maintenance, repair and construction of State maintained roads. Duties include setting up work zones, installing traffic control devices, repairing asphalt pavements, clearing right of way of debris and hazards, assisting with pipe installation, and operating a variety of hand and power tools. Tasks will include the operation of various equipment that includes but is not limited to an asphalt maintainer, asphalt patch truck, tandem dump truck, crack sealing machine, rollers, sweepers, skid steer, and backhoe. This position will monitor tasks performed by inmates and other transportation workers, respond to emergencies such as snow and ice removal, downed trees, and traffic control cleanup, etc. during normal business hours or during emergency call back situations and scheduled night work.

Requirements

  • High school or General Educational Development diploma and five years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Legally operate a motor vehicle
  • Possession of a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker (N) endorsement, or ability to obtain within 360 days of hire
  • Must be at least 21 years of age to transport inmates
  • Must undergo a criminal history check to obtain an inmate card
  • Must complete necessary training and orientation to obtain an inmate card

Nice To Haves

  • Working knowledge of Intermediate Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety policy and practices
  • Experience in shoulder and ditch maintenance
  • Experience in pipe installation
  • Experience in asphalt patching
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and train others in equipment operations
  • Demonstrated ability to direct the daily activities of a work crew
  • Experience in snow and ice removal operations
  • Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer or sweeper
