About The Position

This posting is for a Transportation Worker Level 3 in the Forsyth County Maintenance Unit. Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in the preventive maintenance, repair and construction of State maintained roads. Duties include setting up work zones, installing traffic control devices, repairing asphalt pavements, clearing right of way of debris and hazards, assisting with pipe installation, and operating a variety of hand and power tools. Tasks will include the operation of various equipment that includes but is not limited to an asphalt maintainer, asphalt patch truck, tandem dump truck, crack sealing machine, rollers, sweepers, skid steer, and backhoe. This position will monitor tasks performed by inmates and other transportation workers, respond to emergencies such as snow and ice removal, downed trees, and traffic control cleanup, etc. during normal business hours or during emergency call back situations and scheduled night work.

Requirements

  • Safety-toed shoes required
  • Must be at least 21 years of age to transport inmates
  • Must legally operate a motor vehicle
  • Possession of a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker (N) endorsement, or obtain within 360 days of hire
  • High school or General Educational Development diploma and five years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Completion of a criminal history check, necessary training and orientation to obtain an inmate card
  • Completion and signing of a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06)
  • Successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation
  • Pre-employment drug testing

  • Experience in shoulder and ditch maintenance

  • Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer or sweeper
