About The Position

This position is located in the Duplin County Maintenance Unit. The work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible tasks in the preventive maintenance, repair, and construction of state-maintained roads in Duplin County. The employee will operate at least two pieces of equipment, including but not limited to backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer or sweeper. Experience in performing semi-skilled and skilled maintenance tasks, such as hauling asphalt, aggregate or soil materials, plowing snow, spreading salt, compacting asphalt, compacting embankments, sweeping roads; loading ditching material; and disposing of roadside debris. Work to include, but not limited to, installation of traffic & erosion control devices, clearing of right of way, roadway grading, machining unpaved roads, pavement repair, pipe installation or other drainage tasks, inspecting contract work and monitoring manual tasks performed. Emergency response includes traffic accident clean-up, snow and ice removal, and other emergencies as they occur. This position is subject to emergency call back and scheduled night work during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances. The employee must have the ability to act upon both verbal and written communication. May perform a variety of other assigned duties. Employees at this level may train and operate equipment associated with a higher-level position. Working knowledge of the principles involved in the operation and use of the equipment to which assigned. Ability to perform assigned tasks and to follow oral and written instructions as directed by supervisor. Manual labor includes, but is not limited to operating chain saws, shoveling, driving trucks, and litter pickup. The employee must be able to operate the minimum amount of equipment required in the preceding level. The employee must have the ability to lift and carry 50 lbs., climb, bend, traverse steep and uneven terrain, and work in extreme temperature conditions. The employee must be able to perform manual labor for extended periods of time and operate equipment that vibrates. May require work during non-traditional work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays. Position is subject to emergency callback. Ability to safely use and care for assigned equipment, hand, & power tools. Ability to perform manual maintenance duties and other duties as directed by supervisor. Safety toe footwear is needed for this position. The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s license with Tanker (N) endorsement. The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Safety toe footwear is needed. Position requires work during any adverse weather such as snow and/or ice, tornadoes, hurricanes, etc. which can lead to working extended daily hours, weekends, and holidays. Employees will be subject to outside extreme environmental conditions, in addition to hazards at highway construction sites, including heavy equipment and highway traffic. Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment.

Requirements

  • High school or General Educational Development diploma and three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
  • Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs.
  • Ability to climb, bend, traverse steep and uneven terrain, and work in extreme temperature conditions.
  • Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time.
