The Transportation Worker I performs work primarily involving operation of standard hand tools, power equipment, vehicles, and heavy equipment for preventive maintenance, repair, and construction of roads and roadside features in North Carolina’s highway and roadway systems. Duties may also include inspecting work, ensuring work-zone safety, and participating in snow and ice removal. Other activities may include assisting paint crews; erecting and replacing road signs; helping electronics technicians maintain and install signals; operating equipment for vegetation control, debris removal, snow removal, mowing, and roadway painting; and assisting with grass and wildflower installation and maintenance. The role may also assist with carpentry, welding, steel fabrication, or concrete work. The position requires working outdoors in adverse weather, including snow, ice, tornadoes, and hurricanes. Work may involve extended daily hours, weekends, and holidays, and exposure to extreme environmental conditions and hazards at highway construction sites, including heavy equipment and traffic. Safety-toe footwear is required. The selected candidate must be able to legally operate equipment and trucks requiring a CDL, with manual and automatic transmissions, either at hire or within 360 days of hire. A current CDL at hire or completion of required on-the-job training and federal requirements to obtain a North Carolina CDL within that period is required. A driver-license check is conducted after interviews and before an offer. Applicants must meet NCDOT driving-record standards. Pre-employment drug testing is required, and employment is contingent on successful completion of the post-offer employment evaluation.
