The Transportation Worker I performs road and roadside maintenance, repair, and construction work for North Carolina’s highway and roadway systems. The work primarily involves operating standard hand tools, power equipment, vehicles, and heavy equipment. Duties may include inspecting work and maintaining work-zone safety, flagging, assisting with maintenance and repair projects, removing snow and ice, controlling vegetation, and removing debris. Depending on assignment, work may involve operating tractors and attachments, curb machines, cutoff saws, dump trucks, rollers, compactors, mixers, paint equipment, trenchers, and other roadway-maintenance equipment. Employees may assist with road-sign installation, paint crews, signal maintenance and installation, landscaping, carpentry, welding, steel fabrication, or concrete work. The position requires work in adverse weather, including snow, ice, tornadoes, and hurricanes. Extended daily hours, weekends, and holidays may be required. Employees may encounter extreme environmental conditions and hazards at highway construction sites, including heavy equipment and traffic. Safety-toe footwear is required. The employee must be able to legally operate equipment and trucks requiring a commercial driver’s license (CDL), with manual and automatic transmissions, either at hire or within 360 days of hire. A current CDL at hire or completion of required on-the-job training and federal requirements within that period is required. The role also requires a qualifying driving record, a pre-employment drug test, and signed releases for checks with previous employers regarding controlled-substance and alcohol testing. Employment is contingent on successfully completing NCDOT’s post-offer employment evaluation.
