About The Position

This position is assigned to the District Eight Sign Shop, with various reporting locations across Pendleton, Pocahontas, Randolph, and Tucker Counties. Under general supervision, the employee performs manual and skilled work maintaining and repairing roadway signs. Responsibilities include executing work orders, assisting with sign installation and repairs on breakaway supports according to state standards, following traffic control and worksite safety procedures, monitoring material inventories, reporting material usage and needs, and reporting on work status to the crew supervisor. The selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program, with progression dependent on hours completed, proficiency, training, and obtaining a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). The WVDOT is responsible for over 35,000 miles of state roads, which may require employees to work irregular hours, shifts, weekends, and more than 40 hours per week, occasionally without prior notice. A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) will be required within six (6) months of employment for this Traffic Control assignment. The hourly rate is $17.5313.

Requirements

  • No formal education required.
  • Two (2) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience in roadway maintenance, traffic control, equipment operation or maintenance, or the fabrication of aluminum / other metal parts / other fabricated materials, comparable to the work performed by the Division of Highways.
  • Knowledge of the procedures, techniques, and equipment used in the area of assignment.
  • Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the area of assignment.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and applicable safety standards and procedures in the area of assignment.
  • Knowledge of maintenance and repair methods practiced in the building maintenance trades.
  • Ability to repair and maintain tools and equipment used.
  • Ability to read operating manuals and specifications in the area of assignment.
  • Ability to safely operate basic hand and power tools.
  • Ability to climb high steel structures.
  • Ability to operate and maintain highway equipment and attachments.
  • Ability to diagnose less complex mechanical problems and follow appropriate procedures for repair.
  • Ability to maintain routine records (timecards, work repair orders).
  • Ability to use hand tools and operate motorized equipment in the area of assignment.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to train and work cooperatively with other skilled and semi-skilled workers.
  • Travel may be required; therefore, a valid driver's license is required.
  • A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) will be required within six (6) months of employment in the area of assignment of Traffic Control.

Nice To Haves

  • Successful completion of an approved vocational school program in the area of assignment may be substituted for the required experience in the specified functional area.

Responsibilities

  • Receiving and executing work orders for daily tasks, equipment, and materials.
  • Assisting with the installation and repairs of signs on breakaway supports in accordance with state standards and specifications.
  • Following all procedures for traffic control and worksite safety.
  • Assisting with monitoring material inventories.
  • Reporting material usage and needs to the supervisor.
  • Reporting on the status of work performed to the crew supervisor.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
  • Installs and removes signposts.
  • Erects traffic control signs and barricades on construction and maintenance projects.
  • Operate hydraulic post driver to set new signposts.
  • Erect signposts and new signs along roadway.
  • Cut old signposts with a chop saw or remove with hand tools.
  • Utilize a torch to install pavement markings on roadway.
  • Set up traffic control signs and flag motorists at work zones.
  • Set up lane closures, road closures, and detours at work zones.
  • Manufacturing signs utilizing the Central Sign Shop machinery.
  • Distributing signs or sign accessories from Central Sign Shop to District Sign Shop.
