About The Position

The Transportation Worker 2 Traffic Control is assigned to the District Five Sign Shop and may report to various counties within the district. Under general supervision, the selected applicant performs manual and skilled work maintaining and repairing roadway signs. Key responsibilities include receiving and executing work orders for daily tasks, equipment, and materials. The worker is responsible for assisting with the installation and repairs of signs on breakaway supports in accordance with state standards and specifications. The employee must follow all procedures for traffic control and worksite safety, assist with monitoring material inventories, report material usage and needs to the supervisor, and report on the status of work performed to the crew supervisor. May be exposed to hazardous working conditions and inclement weather. Performs other related duties as required. The selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program. Progression through the apprenticeship program is dependent upon hours completed, proficiency in work, training completed, as well as maintaining and/or obtaining a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). The WVDOT is responsible for the planning, construction, maintenance, and regulation of over 35,000 miles of state roads. This duty may necessitate employees working irregular hours, shifts, weekends, and more than 40 hours per week, occasionally without prior notice. In the area of assignment of Traffic Control, a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) will be required within six (6) months of employment. Pay Grade 11H Tier 1 hourly rate: $17.5313

Requirements

  • No formal education required.
  • Two (2) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience in roadway maintenance, traffic control, equipment operation or maintenance, or the fabrication of aluminum / other metal parts / other fabricated materials, comparable to the work performed by the Division of Highways.
  • Knowledge of the procedures, techniques, and equipment used in the area of assignment.
  • Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the area of assignment.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and applicable safety standards and procedures in the area of assignment.
  • Knowledge of maintenance and repair methods practiced in the building maintenance trades.
  • Ability to repair and maintain tools and equipment used.
  • Ability to read operating manuals and specifications in the area of assignment.
  • Ability to safely operate basic hand and power tools.
  • Ability to climb high steel structures.
  • Ability to operate and maintain highway equipment and attachments.
  • Ability to diagnose less complex mechanical problems and follow appropriate procedures for repair.
  • Ability to maintain routine records (timecards, work repair orders).
  • Ability to use hand tools and operate motorized equipment in the area of assignment.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to train and work cooperatively with other skilled and semi-skilled workers.
  • A valid driver's license is required.
  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL) will be required within six (6) months of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Successful completion of an approved vocational school program in the area of assignment may be substituted for the required experience in the specified functional area.

Responsibilities

  • Cutting old signposts with a chop saw or removing with hand tools.
  • Utilizing a torch to install pavement markings on roadway.
  • Setting up traffic control signs and flagging motorists at work zones.
  • Setting up lane closures, road closures, and detours at work zones.
  • Manufacturing signs utilizing the Central Sign Shop machinery.
  • Distributing signs or sign accessories from Central Sign Shop to District Sign Shop.
