This position performs full-performance level skilled work in the construction and maintenance of highways. Duties include operating motorized highway maintenance equipment, making major and minor repairs to highways, culverts, and bridge structures, and performing equipment maintenance. The role also involves flagging, erecting traffic control signs and barricades, shoveling materials, cleaning culverts, mowing, and brush cutting. Employees may be exposed to hazardous working conditions and inclement weather. The selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program, with progression dependent on hours completed, proficiency, training, and obtaining a Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). The WVDOT is responsible for the planning, construction, maintenance, and regulation of over 35,000 miles of state roads. This duty may necessitate employees working irregular hours, shifts, weekends, and more than 40 hours per week, occasionally without prior notice.
