Transportation Worker 2 Equipment Operator - Nicholas County
About The Position
This position performs full-performance level skilled work in the construction and maintenance of highways. Duties include operating motorized highway maintenance equipment, making major and minor repairs to highways, culverts, and bridge structures, and performing equipment maintenance. The role also involves flagging, erecting traffic control signs and barricades, shoveling materials, cleaning culverts, mowing, and brush cutting. Employees may be exposed to hazardous working conditions and inclement weather. The selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program, with progression dependent on hours completed, proficiency, training, and obtaining a Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). The WVDOT is responsible for the planning, construction, maintenance, and regulation of over 35,000 miles of state roads. This duty may necessitate employees working irregular hours, shifts, weekends, and more than 40 hours per week, occasionally without prior notice.
Requirements
- A valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License is required.
- Knowledge of the procedures, techniques, and equipment used in the area of assignment.
- Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the area of assignment.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards and applicable safety standards and procedures in the area of assignment.
- Knowledge of maintenance and repair methods practiced in the building maintenance trades.
- Ability to repair and maintain tools and equipment used.
- Ability to read operating manuals and specifications in the area of assignment.
- Ability to safely operate basic hand and power tools.
- Ability to climb high steel structures.
- Ability to operate and maintain highway equipment and attachments.
- Ability to diagnose less complex mechanical problems and follow appropriate procedures for repair.
- Ability to maintain routine records (timecards, work repair orders).
- Ability to use hand tools and operate motorized equipment in the area of assignment.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to train and work cooperatively with other skilled and semi-skilled workers.
- No formal education required.
- No Substitutions for the Equipment Operator CDL requirement.

Responsibilities
- Operating motorized highway maintenance equipment such as skid steer, utility tractor, aerial bucket truck, front-end loader, tandem-axle truck, and snowplow.
- Making major repairs to highways, culverts, and bridge structures.
- Making minor mechanical repairs in the field such as changing tires, blades, or filters.
- Responsible for equipment maintenance including but not limited to cleaning and lubricating equipment and checking fluid levels.
- Flagging, erecting traffic control signs and barricades on construction and maintenance projects.
- Shoveling materials, cleaning culverts, mowing, and brush cutting.
- Driving dump, flatbed, or tandem-axle trucks.
- Operating power vegetation equipment and attachments.
- Operating highway maintenance equipment and attachments.
- Operating heavy vehicles/GVWR 26,001 or greater.
- Repairing and constructing various culvert types.
- Patching cement, pavement and bridge decks.
- Sealing joints and cracks in paved surfaces.
- Cleaning equipment and workshop.
- Transporting fuel to equipment.
