About The Position

This entry-level position involves the construction and maintenance of highways. The Transportation Worker 1 Equipment Operator will report to the Route 9/340 Expressway Maintenance Organization. Duties include driving light trucks, operating various equipment such as fork trucks, end loaders, skid steers, rollers, utility tractors, and brush chippers, as well as using hand tools. The role may involve answering telephone and radio calls during snow removal and ice control (SRIC), transporting materials or fuel, and providing traffic control by flagging. Selected applicants may be exposed to hazardous working conditions and inclement weather. The position includes placement in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program, with a requirement to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within 6 months of employment. Advancement opportunities are dependent on completed hours, proficiency, training, and maintaining a CDL. The WVDOT is responsible for over 35,000 miles of state roads, which may require employees to work irregular hours, shifts, weekends, and more than 40 hours per week, sometimes without prior notice.

Requirements

  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to learn from example and work cooperatively with others.
  • Ability to maintain routine records (timecards, repair work orders).
  • Knowledge of general safety procedures.
  • Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and other motor-driven equipment.
  • Knowledge of the operation of motor-driven equipment.
  • Skill in the use of tools and equipment used in the repair of motor-driven equipment.
  • Ability to diagnose minor mechanical problems and determine appropriate procedures for repair.
  • A valid driver’s license is required.
  • A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) will be required within six (6) months of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Drive a light truck or vehicle during regular operation as well as during snow removal and ice control (SRIC).
  • Operate various equipment such as a fork truck, end loader, skid steer, rollers, utility tractor, brush chipper, as well as various hand tools.
  • Fill in answering telephone and radio calls during SRIC.
  • Transport materials or fuel to equipment.
  • Provide traffic control by flagging on job sites.
  • Perform minor maintenance on the fleet of equipment and vehicles.
  • Control brush and vegetation using hand tools and other equipment.
  • Plow snow using a light truck.
