About The Position

This position performs entry-level repairs and preventative maintenance on transportation vehicles and all types of highway equipment. Responsibilities include minor maintenance on fleet equipment and vehicles, such as changing or repairing tires, checking automotive fluids, installing windshield wipers, and inspecting vehicles for compliance with state regulations. The role also involves keeping the garage area clean to ensure a safe work environment and assisting higher-level mechanics with vehicle and heavy equipment repairs. The selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program and must obtain a commercial driver's license (CDL) within 6 months of employment. Advancement opportunities are dependent on completed hours, proficiency, training, and maintaining a CDL. The WVDOT is responsible for over 35,000 miles of state roads, which may require employees to work irregular hours, shifts, weekends, and more than 40 hours per week, sometimes without prior notice.

Requirements

  • No formal education required.
  • No prior experience is required.
  • Knowledge of general safety procedures.
  • Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and other motor-driven equipment.
  • Knowledge of the operation of motor-driven equipment.
  • Skill in the use of tools and equipment used in the repair of motor-driven equipment.
  • Ability to diagnose minor mechanical problems and determine appropriate procedures for repair.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to learn from example and work cooperatively with others.
  • Ability to maintain routine records (timecards, repair work orders).
  • A valid driver’s license is required.
  • Must obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of employment.
