About The Position

This position performs full-performance-level skilled work in the repair and maintenance of all highway equipment. The Transportation Worker 3 Mechanic will often serve as a working shop leader, mentoring lower-level employees and mechanics. As an advanced-level mechanic, they will perform major overhauls of gasoline and diesel-powered equipment, including repairs of hydraulic brake systems and troubleshooting electrical systems. Skills are needed for the fabrication of engines and machinery parts from blueprints and drawings. With appropriate certification and licenses, the employee is responsible for driving the equipment after repairs to test its operation. Maintains records of work orders, inventory, and repairs completed. May be exposed to hazardous working conditions and inclement weather. The selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program. Progression through the apprenticeship program is dependent upon hours completed, proficiency in work, training completed, as well as maintaining and/or obtaining a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). The WVDOT is responsible for the planning, construction, maintenance, and regulation of over 35,000 miles of state roads. This duty may necessitate employees working irregular hours, shifts, weekends, and more than 40 hours per week, occasionally without prior notice.

Requirements

Four (4) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience as an automotive mechanic servicing either gasoline or diesel-powered vehicles or equipment.
Knowledge of safety practices used in structural steel construction.
Knowledge of the procedures, techniques, and equipment used in the area of assignment.
Knowledge of the occupational hazards and applicable safety standards and procedures in the area of assignment.
Knowledge of basic blueprint reading.
Knowledge of general construction and maintenance practices.
Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of gasoline and diesel-powered engines and their components.
Knowledge of the operation of motor-driven equipment.
Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and determine appropriate procedures for repairs.
Ability to safely operate basic hand and power tools.
Ability to read operation manuals, blueprints, and specifications in the area of assignment.
Ability to operate motorized equipment in the area of assignment.
Ability to perform skilled trades work in bridge construction and maintenance.
Ability to operate and maintain highway equipment and attachments.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to maintain accurate records of daily maintenance activities and of gauges and meters used in heating, ventilation, and cooling systems.
Ability to climb high steel structures.
Ability to train and work cooperatively with other skilled and semi-skilled workers.
Valid driver’s license is required.
Commercial Driver's License (CDL) will be required within six (6) months of employment.

Nice To Haves

Successful completion of an approved vocational school program may be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience in the specified area of assignment.

Responsibilities
