About The Position

The Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is seeking a motivated and analytical individual for a 12-month on-the-job training program to become a Transportation Planning Specialist Trainee. This program focuses on traffic data systems, reporting, and analysis, preparing the trainee for a career in transportation planning within the Bureau of Planning and Research. The role involves learning technical tools and reviewing transportation information to support the Statewide Traffic Analysis unit.

Requirements

• A bachelor's degree in civil engineering, environmental engineering, electrical engineering, mathematics, statistics, planning, computer science, or geography; or An equivalent combination of experience and training.
• Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree.
• Must meet the PA residency requirement.
• Must be able to perform essential job functions.

Responsibilities

• Develop knowledge of applications including, but not limited to Traffic Data System, Traffic Monitoring System, and Traffic Data Upload System (TDUS).
• Review and verify traffic count data supplied by internal staff and external partners.
• Use Traffic Data System and related tools to generate maps, produce reports, and prepare traffic count program packets.
• Maintain weekly count data through TDUS and review Roadway Management System error reports.
• Create and examine regional and county traffic volume maps each year.
• Research and complete traffic information requests and update spreadsheets for reporting.
