About The Position

The State of Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is seeking eligible agency employees to apply for the position of Transportation Maintainer 3 (Sweeper Operator) within the Bureau of Highway Operations in Danbury, CT. This role is responsible for safely operating a Sweeper and other heavy equipment in accordance with safety guidelines, performing daily maintenance and safety checks on equipment within the District 4 area. The position is full-time, 40 hours per week, on the first shift (7:30 AM - 4:00 PM), and is an on-site role at the Danbury Maintenance Garage.

Requirements

  • Current CDL Class A or B with tank endorsement.
  • Valid Medical Examiner’s Card (MEC).
  • Willingness to accept assignment to emergency duties, including snow and ice removal.
  • Willingness to work mandatory winter overtime from November 1 through April 30.
  • Ability to stay at work for the duration of storms, including holidays and weekends.
  • 30-mile residency from the posted job location.
  • Completed respirator physical.
  • Current respirator fit test.
  • Two (2) years of experience in construction, landscaping, commercial driving, snow plowing, maintenance and repair of roadsides, roadways, bridges or airports, in work involving the operation and care of mechanical equipment, or in work in one of the recognized maintenance trades.
  • Ability to use and make ordinary repairs to more complex mechanical equipment.
  • Ability to operate equipment as listed on attached Addendum.
  • Ability to keep shop records and prepare reports.
  • Ability to use, set up and maintain ordinary bench and other shop machine tools and equipment.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to utilize computer software.
  • Adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility, and visual and auditory acuity.
  • Maintain physical fitness to perform the duties of the class.
  • Must be a current State of Connecticut employee of the agency for at least six (6) months of full-time service or full-time equivalent service.

Responsibilities

  • Safely operate a Sweeper and other heavy equipment in accordance with safety guidelines.
  • Perform daily maintenance and safety checks on equipment.
  • Accept assignment to emergency duties, including snow and ice removal.
  • Stay at work for the duration of storms, which may include holidays and weekends.
  • Operate and maintain complex mechanical equipment.
  • Perform skilled tasks in areas such as construction, maintenance, and mechanical repair.
  • Drive various trucks and operate equipment including concrete saws, core drills, mowers, loaders, pavement marking machines, power rollers, power pickup sweepers, shotcrete/gunite machines, tilt bed trailers, post pounder, Vactor, and track-mounted skid steers with various attachments.
  • Perform duties such as drainage pipe setting, driving wing trucks with plows, skilled tree climbing, and pothole patching.
  • May supervise a materials management stockroom.
  • Assist in preparing and checking reports.
  • Perform wildlife hazard control.
  • Monitor and communicate via radio.
  • Escort vendors and contractors in secure areas at state-owned airports.
  • Receive training in, stand by for, and respond to fire and/or crash emergency situations at state-owned airports.
  • Use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles.
  • Complete an asbestos removal program if required.
