About The Position

The Department of Transportation is seeking a Transportation Equipment Operator A who enjoys active, hands-on work. In this role, you will operate equipment, support maintenance crews, and help keep Butler County roads safe for the public. You will learn valuable skills while contributing to important year-round operations. This position offers steady, meaningful work that supports safe and reliable travel. This position supports highway and bridge maintenance by operating equipment, performing manual tasks, and following proper safety procedures. The work helps ensure safe and dependable travel throughout Butler County.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of the Transportation Equipment Operator Trainee Program (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or Graduation from a Commercial Driver’s License Training School; or An equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Possession of an active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver's License or equivalent with the Air Brake (L) and Manual Transmission (E ) Restrictions removed.
  • Demonstrate successful operation of equipment with a manual transmission.
  • Possession of an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations.
  • Obtain an active certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in the operation of heavy trucks and loaders, and two additional pieces of construction equipment, within the probationary period.
  • Obtain an active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N) during the probationary period and continuously maintain it while employed in this job.
  • Subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations.
  • Must be able to perform essential job functions.

Responsibilities

  • Operate trucks, loaders, and other assigned machinery for maintenance activities
  • Use hand and power tools to complete tasks such as cutting brush, repairing guiderails, and clearing culverts
  • Follow safety procedures, use protective gear, and report hazards or incidents immediately
  • Perform inspections, make adjustments, and complete minor repairs to keep equipment in good condition
  • Assist with manual labor tasks including digging, mowing, patching, and installing signs
