About The Position

Step into a role where teamwork, safety, and skill-building come together! As a PennDOT CDL Operator with the Department of Transportation, you will help keep Pennsylvania roads safe and well maintained. This position gives you hands-on experience with a wide range of tools and equipment used in highway and bridge work. Your efforts support crews that improve travel conditions for communities every day! This role focuses on operating highway maintenance equipment and performing manual labor tasks that support road and bridge upkeep. It combines equipment operation, safety awareness, and hands-on work in outdoor environments.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of the Transportation Equipment Operator Trainee Program (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or Graduation from a Commercial Driver’s License Training School; or An equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Possession of an active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver's License or equivalent with the Air Brake Restriction (L) removed.
  • Possession of an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations.
  • Ability to perform essential job functions.
  • Must pass a background investigation.

Nice To Haves

  • This position requires that the E restriction is removed.
  • All employees must obtain an active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N) during the probationary period and continuously maintain it while employed in this job.
  • All employees must obtain an active certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in the operation of heavy trucks and loaders, and two additional pieces of construction equipment, within the probationary period.
  • This position requires employees to demonstrate successful operation of equipment with a manual transmission.
  • Employees are required to obtain additional certifications issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation on assigned pieces of equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Operate trucks, loaders, and other equipment used in highway maintenance
  • Maintain the required CDL and complete daily pre- and post-operation checks
  • Perform flagging responsibilities to manage safe traffic flow
  • Use hand tools to complete tasks such as clearing brush, repairing guiderails, and cleaning culverts
  • Follow proper procedures, report incidents immediately, and maintain awareness of hazards
  • Perform basic field adjustments, minor repairs, and preventative maintenance on assigned equipment
