About The Position

We are currently searching for an experienced Transportation Engineer in Training to support our Gulf Region located in Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee. To be considered for this position, applicants must have, at minimum, 2 years of experience in either Traffic or Roadway design.

Requirements

• BS in Civil Engineering
• EIT (E.I.) Certification
• 2–4 years of experience
• Familiarity with DOT design standards, MUTCD, and AASHTO
• Self-starter capable of completing tasks with minimal oversight
• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
• Willingness and motivation to curate and eventually develop a personal client base
• Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening to ensure a safe and productive work environment. Volkert adheres to federal guidelines, which may include testing for substances such as marijuana. Please note that federal regulations may differ from state-specific guidelines
• Valid driver’s license and a satisfactory motor vehicle report (MVR)

Nice To Haves

• Experience with OpenRoads Designer
• Familiarity with traffic analysis software such as VISSIM, Synchro/SimTraffic, Sidra Intersection, or HCS
• Experience with transportation planning, including comprehensive corridor analysis, local programs, public involvement, safety and access, pedestrian and bicycle planning, multimodal planning, and traffic operations

Responsibilities

• Collect and analyze data for inclusion in project plans, technical reports, and engineering studies
• Assist with the development of traffic impact studies, interchange access requests, safety studies, traffic signal warrant studies, land use planning, master plan studies, bikeway planning and design, and community and campus planning
• Prepare and assist in preparing roadway design plans using OpenRoads Designer
• Work on traffic signal design plans for new intersections and signal modifications to facilitate multimodal accommodations
• Work on temporary traffic control plans/traffic management plans (TMP) and signing and pavement marking plans
• Assist in preparing conceptual intersection layouts, schematics, and signal timings
• Contribute to the preparation and modification of engineering reports and calculations for a wide variety of projects
• Prepare and assist in preparing project construction quantities, cost estimates, specifications, and schedules
• Review quantity estimates, details, calculations, and drawings for compliance with project requirements
• Attend project meetings with clients
• Learn project budgets to meet financial metrics
• Potential to learn and participate in business development activities
• Perform other duties as assigned
