About The Position

Within the Department of Transportation (DOT), to assist in performing routine and entry level civil engineering and related tasks in the area of specialization indicated by the title of the class of position. This role involves assisting in performing routine and entry level bridge engineering duties related to overseeing the safety of all types of bridges. Responsibilities include assisting in performing bridge loading rating analyses in-house and reviewing consultant load ratings, developing scopes of work and contract documents for bridge maintenance and preservation, and assisting in planning and performing bridge inspections. The role also involves assisting in the oversight, escort, and review of vehicle permits for capacity, clearance, and safety on highways and bridges.

Requirements

  • Working knowledge of engineering principles and practices of the area of specialization.
  • Ability to apply engineering principles and practices.
  • Working knowledge of engineering fundamentals and techniques to resolve problems.
  • Considerable skill in the use of current computer aided engineering technology.
  • Working knowledge of all relevant AASHTO bridge, traffic, and highway design codes.
  • Ability to apply engineering principles and practices to troubleshoot field problems and recommend solutions.
  • Ability to read and interpret all types of plans and specifications.
  • Ability to review the work of other civil engineers.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, public officials and the general public.
  • Graduation from a college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering.
  • Within six months after appointment, must possess a certificate of completion that fulfills the comprehensive bridge inspection training requirements of the National Bridge Inspection Standards.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in performing routine and entry level civil engineering and related tasks in the area of specialization.
  • Assist in performing routine and entry level bridge engineering duties related to overseeing the safety of all types of bridges.
  • Assist in performing bridge loading rating analyses in-house and assist in the review of consultant load ratings.
  • Assist in developing scopes of work and contract documents for bridge maintenance and preservation including distribution of quantities, specifications and estimates.
  • Assist in planning and performing bridge inspections.
  • Assist in preparing bridge inspection reports, and review of consultant inspections.
  • Assist in the oversight, escort and review of vehicle permits for capacity, clearance and safety on highways and bridges.
  • Perform technical safety inspections in accordance with national bridge inspection standards.
  • Inspect bridges for corrosion and deterioration, make technical measurements, and inspect concrete beams and girders.
  • Inspect abutments, piers, decks, trusses, bearings for deterioration.
  • Prepare technical inspection notes, photos and sketches.
  • Operate special inspection equipment.
  • Review engineering plans and prior inspection reports.
  • Coordinate traffic control and equipment on-site.
