About The Position

Bridge Practice Michael Baker International has addressed bridge design, construction and preservation challenges with innovative and sustainable solutions. Exemplifying its depth and versatility in the bridge space, Michael Baker International, ranked Number Seven by Engineering News-Record in its annual ranking of Bridge Design Firms in the United States, has partnered with clients on a full spectrum of bridge types-from conventional grade separations to major, complex river crossings, including trusses, arches, box girders and cable-stayed bridges. The Transportation Director will oversee the daily management and operations of the department. This role involves leading a team of engineers and designers in the design and plan preparation for a variety of transportation improvement projects for both public and private clients in the Columbus, OH area. Projects may include highways, roadways, bridges, traffic systems, transit, aviation, and more. The Director will also focus on the department's growth and development, as well as maintaining positive client relationships.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or a related field (Master’s Degree is a plus).
  • Ohio Professional Engineer’s (PE) license.
  • 15+ years of transportation design experience with increasing levels of responsibility.
  • Demonstrated supervisory and mentoring skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including proposal writing, presentation skills, public speaking, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong track record of successful project delivery.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic environment and manage multiple tasks.
  • Drive to be a leader within the company and the professional community.
  • Strong engineering judgment with a commitment to quality and financial excellence.
  • Team player with strategic thinking skills, a passion for mentoring junior staff, and a genuine enjoyment of the work.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with ODOT is highly desired
  • Design-Build project experience is a plus

Responsibilities

  • Lead, assign, and review the work of the project delivery team, providing technical guidance and oversight for transportation project designs.
  • Oversee department projects to ensure they meet agreed-upon scope, budget, and schedule.
  • Ensure department compliance with quality management and quality assurance practices.
  • Coach, develop, and mentor staff, attracting and retaining highly talented transportation professionals.
  • Coordinate business development activities to support overall growth objectives, including project pursuits, client outreach, marketing, teaming arrangements, capture planning, proposal development and review, and interview preparation and delivery.
  • Lead strategic planning and build relationships with key client decision-makers, staying ahead of upcoming project advertisements and changes within client organizations.
  • Be an active and visible member of the Columbus, OH transportation community through professional organization involvement.
  • Maintain and enhance existing client relationships, generate additional opportunities with current clients, and develop new clients.
  • Monitor client satisfaction both internally and externally.
  • Coordinate with Great Lakes Region transportation leadership on resource planning, business development, and project execution.
  • Serve as a project manager on multi-discipline transportation design projects.
  • Monitor and control the department's annual operating budget.
