Whether working in the field or in the office, every AltaLinker contributes to keeping the lights on. We are hiring for a Transmission Power Line Technician. We currently have a need in our Transmission Field Operations group for a Transmission Power Line Technician on the South Transmission Crew located in the Calgary area. Under the supervision of the Manager, Transmission Lines South, the Transmission Power Line Technician is required to function as a Journeyman in the building, modifying or maintaining the Transmission system. This position is stationed out of our Rocky View County, AB Service Center.

Requirements

  • Journeyman Power Lineman Certificate or equivalent.
  • Minimum grade 12 Diploma; Math 20.
  • Physically capable of performing work from man-baskets, buckets, helicopters, poles and towers.
  • Physically capable of working in adverse/inclement weather conditions.
  • Capable of stringing, sagging, tie in, dead-end and splicing of conductors tension or un-tension for all conductors including self-dampening (SD).
  • Class 3 Driver's License is mandatory.
  • Proven ability/experience in the above noted responsibilities.
  • Certified in TDG, WHMIS, and First Aid.
  • Satisfactory driving record required. Drivers abstract to be provided upon interview.
  • Must live within 1 hour of the office, in order to respond to emergency call outs.
  • Be in good physical condition, have good manual dexterity and physical coordination and meet all physical fitness, medical and weight requirements.
  • Strong knowledge and adherence to safety practices, procedures, and standards required in line construction.
  • A demonstrated team player with excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Capable of working independently and in a team environment.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills to interface with team members and customers to promote positive customer outcomes.
  • Able and willing to work at heights and in varying extreme climates.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills.
  • Capable of lifting objects greater than 25 Kg's.
  • Mechanical ability.
  • Willing to work away from home for short to extended periods of time.
  • Proven track record of good attendance and performance.

Nice To Haves

  • Interprovincial Red Seal
  • Experience in the Transmission field
  • Live Line Hot Stick/Bare hand experience
  • Experience with working around helicopters

Responsibilities

  • Perform line maintenance in a safe efficient manner utilizing de-energized, live line hot stick or live line bare hand techniques on voltages up to and including 500KV.
  • Safe operation of heavy and tracked equipment including Radial Arm Diggers, Line Trucks, Cranes, and all terrain equipment (Foremost) as required.
  • Operate and maintain such hand tools as may be required for the job including blocks, grips, jacks, hot line tools and cover up, etc.
  • Organize the portion of the assigned job.
  • Maintain good public relations with persons inside and outside the company.
  • Instruct and train junior personnel in duties, safe work practices, care and use of tools and equipment.
  • Maintain personal and group safety at all times and exercise appropriate caution when working with tension for rigging, on or close to energized equipment.
  • Travel to required sites for extended periods of time (work week consists of 4, 10-hour days, and crew is away on average 60-100 nights per year).
  • Respond to unscheduled outages as the result of weather, component failures, vehicular accidents, etc.
  • Be a positive team member through open communication and active participation in crew tasks.
