Transmission Planning Engineer, Staff, Senior or Principal

Xcel Energy•Minneapolis, MN
•$97,000 - $178,900•Hybrid

About The Position

Xcel Energy is hiring a Transmission Planning Engineer at the staff, senior, or principal level. The selected candidate will be placed at a level commensurate with their skills and experience. The role applies extensive technical expertise across related disciplines and serves as a technical advisor and consultant. It carries out complex or innovative assignments, develops or improves techniques and procedures, and may represent the organization as the prime technical contact on contracts and projects. Work is performed with substantial independence and latitude in setting technical objectives, with completed work reviewed over the longer term for desired results. The position leads or contributes to multiple moderate-to-large projects, or portions of major projects, and may assign work to and direct engineers, technicians, craft personnel, and administrative staff. The senior-level role requires strong communication skills to explain technical concepts to technical and non-technical stakeholders in meetings, presentations, discussions, and written reports. Xcel Energy supports a hybrid work model; many positions are expected onsite three days per week, Tuesday through Thursday, though expectations vary by role, team, and business needs.

  • Senior and principal levels: experience with multiple power-system transmission analysis tools, such as PSSE, TARA, EMS, ASPEN, CAPE, PROMOD, PLEXOS, PowerWorld, or PSCAD, or similar software.
  • Demonstrate broad knowledge and proficiency in power-system studies or transmission planning, knowledge of related specialties, and general knowledge of related disciplines.
  • The role calls for balancing technical expertise with strong communication skills and working with limited direction.
