About The Position

We’re looking for a passionate Transmission Engineer - OHL Specialist Techniques & Technology to join our Overhead Lines – Safety and Engineering Team! You will undertake responsibility and accountability for supporting the National Overhead Line Team in delivering both live and de-energised working operations. You will contribute to the development and deployment of specialist access techniques, as well as the development and implementation of specialist equipment, ensuring the safe and effective execution of operational activities. This role is peripatetic, and we encourage a hybrid working approach, although we’re happy to discuss any additional flexibility in working patterns or requirements that you feel could help to make this job work for you!

Requirements

  • Minimum technical qualification of HNC or equivalent in an engineering discipline.
  • Full driving licence.
  • NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent qualification.
  • Requires an expert understanding of all safety and technical requirements and procedures related to Overhead line maintenance and construction
  • Good understanding of Live and De-energised Working techniques.
  • Good understanding of the specialist access techniques used in Asset Ops OHL’s.
  • Good understanding of current operations inclusive of comprehensive knowledge of applicable national and international procedures.
  • Understanding of current National Safety legislation.
  • This is a technical expert & support role, responsible for present and future approaches to Overhead Line Live and De-energised Working operations and specialist techniques.
  • Good understanding of the safety, procedural and technical issues relating to all Overhead Line systems with specific expertise in Live Working and specialist access.
  • An understanding of the operational requirements of the National Grid Overhead Lines system and the operations aspect of the TNCC.
  • Have a thorough understanding of the interaction of site activities on the wider operation of the HV electrical system.
  • Good understanding and interpretation of national/international standards applicable to live working and specialist access techniques.
  • Effective management and control of agreed project expenditure and of allocated budgets.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure day-to-day management of the Live and De-energised Working and Specialist Access plant, equipment and procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with the relevant statutory legislation and internal Policies, Transmission and Business procedures.
  • Provide technical support to the Teams for evaluation of planned Live and De-energised work and specialist access work in accordance with all Policies and Procedures.
  • Provide specialist input and support for project work pack development using specialist access techniques.
  • Develop and review the training and authorisation package for Live and De-energised Working and specialist access operations.
  • Provide specialist support to Lead Transmission Engineer – OHL Specialist Techniques & Technology for Authorisation Panels. Ensure records and authorisations are maintained.
  • Support Teams to develop and deploy specialist equipment for condition monitoring, quality inspections and defect monitoring.
  • Develop Procedures, Training and Authorisation for Specialist Equipment deployment in the field.
  • Identify, develop opportunities to deploy specialist access techniques such as rope access, helicopter, MEWP or crane access.
  • Provide active participation in ensuring emergency response readiness is in place.
  • Provide regular status reports which will include safety performance, milestone progress, risk management and provide input to forecasting and financial performance.
