About The Position

The Transcriber/Translator transcribes and translates materials including video and audio recordings, written materials, and conversation from Yup’ik to English and English to Yup’ik, facilitating understanding for a variety of audiences. This role involves practicing Yup’ik orthography, translating and transcribing various forms of content, and potentially acting as an official translator in meetings and conferences. The position also includes assisting in making transcriptions usable, adding information to the Atlas website, and transcribing Elder’s texts and stories. Responsibilities extend to converting written materials between languages, creating new texts that accurately reflect the original content and style, and editing/proofreading for language accuracy. The role requires the use of dictionaries, glossaries, and computer-assisted translation tools, with the goal of facilitating communication for those with limited English proficiency and building collaborative relationships. Participation in the Cultural Engagement Team Project and performing other assigned duties are also part of the role. The job requires working in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner.

Requirements

  • Ability to transcribe and translate Central Yup’ik and Cup’ik dialects to English.
  • Ability to express oneself clearly and effectively in oral and written form in both English and Yupik.
  • Strong knowledge in the structure and content of both English and Yup’ik language(s) including meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
  • Working knowledge in translation and technical writing.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others in writing as indicated by the needs of the reader/audience.
  • Ability to be an active listener.
  • Ability to find and identify essential information.
  • Ability to find ways to structure or classify multiple pieces of information.
  • Ability to reorganize information to get a better approach to problems or tasks.
  • Ability to actively learn new material or information to grasp its implications.
  • Ability to utilize Microsoft Office Suite Programs: Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint.
  • High School or GED equivalent.
  • Two years of experience in transcribing and translating.
  • Ability to Speak Yupik is required; Fluent in Yupik reading and writing.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate’s degree in related field preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Use dictionaries and glossaries for reference.
  • Employ computer-assisted translation.
  • Facilitate communication for those with limited English proficiency.
  • Build and maintain collaborative relationships by working with groups, organizations, and partners.
