About The Position

Under the direction of the Supervisor of ELL, interprets oral and/or written communications to assist the school district in communicating with students and parents that are not fluent in English. This person serves as a district representative to our community and, in turn, represents the community to the school district.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree (A.A.) or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school or one to two years related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must meet current No Child Left Behind (NCLB) requirements and Intermediate Interpreter Training Course.
  • Ability to interact appropriately with teachers, staff, community members, and students.
  • Focuses on solving conflict; maintains confidentiality; Contributes to building a positive team spirit.
  • Ability to communicate fluently verbally and in writing in English and Spanish.
  • Ability to present information and respond effectively to questions in one-on-one, small and large group situations to students and other school staff.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and area.
  • Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra, geometry, fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to complete instructions furnished in written, oral, schedule, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • General knowledge of computer usage and ability to use database software, e-mail, internet software, spreadsheets, teaching software, and word processing software.
  • Certificates determined necessary by the District, including a valid driver's license.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitates and translates at suspension and expulsion hearings, Special Education eligibility and annual meetings, parent-teacher conferences, and meetings with law enforcement.
  • Translates and interprets school district documents, letters of communication, registration forms, and student and parent handbooks for students, staff, and parents.
  • Facilitates and translates conversations between staff, parents, and/or students.
  • Coordinates and proctors student testing.
  • Maintains accurate records and records gathered information within the scope of District policies and state and federal laws.
  • Obtains necessary instructional materials from a variety of sources.
  • Assists in preparing instructional materials for teachers and/or schools.
  • Assists with in-home visits.
  • Communicates effectively and cooperatively with co-workers, staff, students, and the public.
  • Works as a team player at all levels and demonstrates excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Maintains competency in all position responsibilities.
  • Complies with all safety and work rules, policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for proper utilization, operation, and maintenance of all department resources.
  • Provides support to other positions as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
