About The Position

The City of Guelph is seeking a Transit Technology Specialist to join the Public Services Department. This role is responsible for the implementation, operation, maintenance, and upgrades of various Transit Technology Systems. The specialist will act as the first point of contact for training and supporting staff, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring the daily operations of hardware and software systems. The position requires a deep understanding of Guelph Transit's business operations and the ability to develop and maintain SOPs, user guides, and technical manuals. The role also involves ensuring transit technology security, leading continuous improvement initiatives, and liaising with vendors. Additionally, the specialist will support project managers with capital system enhancements, work with Fleet and IT departments, perform system administration, and contribute to upcoming transit technology initiatives.

Requirements

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in Computer Science, Information Science, or related discipline.
  • Considerable experience with technical system administration and client services.
  • Knowledge of information technology system implementation and administration, business process analysis, and data analysis.
  • Knowledge of Intelligent Transportation System architecture and its application in a transit environment.
  • Mechanical aptitude, analytical, and technical skills to analyze, diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve software and hardware issues in transit system applications.
  • Communication skills to respond to technical inquiries; advise, instruct, and train staff; interact with vendors; and participate as an effective team member.
  • Ability to read technical manuals, updates, system implementation and testing plans, and system specifications.
  • Ability to write/develop user guides, test plans, and system communications to staff.
  • Proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of stakeholders while providing excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to manage workload in a high-pace environment with constantly changing priorities.
  • Effective problem-solving, decision-making, and critical thinking skills.
  • A valid G driver’s licence with a good driving record. Successful candidates will be required to provide a current driver’s abstract prior to their start date.

Responsibilities

  • Act as the first point of contact for training and supporting staff through troubleshooting, resolving, and escalating reported issues and risks related to transit technology systems.
  • Oversee the daily operations and support of various Transit hardware and software technology systems, including regular checks to ensure optimal performance.
  • Provide subject matter expertise and technical advice/guidance to staff on all transit technology systems, including maintenance and operation of transit devices/equipment interfacing with other systems.
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of Guelph Transit's business (Operations, Business Services, Planning and Scheduling, Facilities) to effectively support required transit technologies.
  • Develop and maintain SOPs, user guides, and technical manuals for system administration, including content for Transit management, Fleet management, IT management, and vendors.
  • Ensure transit technology security requirements are developed and maintained according to corporate guidelines and industry standards.
  • Identify and manage operational opportunities for continuous improvement initiatives related to Transit technologies to enhance service delivery and resolve gaps.
  • Lead change management for operational improvements, including providing technical support, performing system testing, creating SOPs, updating technical manuals, and training staff.
  • Liaise with vendors for price quotes and resolution of minor/daily operational system issues.
  • Support the Project Manager of Customer Experience for capital system enhancements with subject matter expertise (e.g., version upgrades, system enhancements, integrations, manual/SOP development, training, RFP/tender support).
  • Collaborate with Fleet and IT for maintaining and troubleshooting on-bus hardware and Transit technology systems administration.
  • Perform system administration functions such as module upgrades, managing users, permissions, and privileges.
  • Lead or participate in team development of user applications and/or enhancement of existing applications.
  • Conduct related research and development, write technical specifications, and work with consultants to ensure contract compliance.
  • Provide insight and knowledge towards upcoming transit technology initiatives.
  • Ensure application designs, systems software, and networks are compatible and aligned with departmental practices and goals.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
