About The Position

Under the direction of the Director of Public Transportation, the Transit Shift Leader assists with organizing, coordinating, and overseeing the daily operations of the City of Wilmington Transportation System. The Transit Shift Leader provides operational oversight and supervision of assigned transit staff, assists with maintaining safe and efficient transit services, and may perform driver or dispatcher duties when necessary. This position primarily works evenings and weekends. This is a safety-sensitive position. The employee is responsible for assisting with the inspection and monitoring of transit vehicles to help ensure the safe and lawful operation of the system fleet. Duties must be performed in compliance with applicable U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), federal, state, local, and City policies and regulations, including applicable DOT drug and alcohol testing requirements.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must possess a valid Ohio driver's license and maintain insurability under the City's vehicle insurance requirements.
  • Must successfully complete any required pre-employment DOT physical examination and drug screening.
  • Three (3) years of experience in public transit or a related field, including at least one (1) year of radio dispatching experience.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees and supervises transit operations during assigned shifts.
  • Supervises and coordinates the activities of assigned employees.
  • Reviews daily logs, service delay reports, accident reports, and other operational documentation and takes appropriate action when necessary.
  • Counsels and coaches employees regarding job performance, conduct, policies, and procedures.
  • Monitors operations to ensure safe work and driving practices are followed.
  • Reviews and verifies the work of assigned employees for accuracy, proper methods and techniques, and compliance with applicable standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Communicates with dispatchers, drivers, supervisors, and other employees by radio or other communication systems as needed.
  • Assists with the inspection and monitoring of transit vehicles to ensure safe and lawful operation.
  • May perform the duties of a transit driver or dispatcher in the absence of assigned staff.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.
