Transformer Fabrication Supervisor

TorusSalt Lake City, UT
Onsite

About The Position

As the Transformer Fabrication Supervisor, you will lead the setup, launch, and daily shop-floor execution of our new transformer manufacturing division at our GigaOne facility in Salt Lake City. Reporting to the Fabrication Manager, you will directly manage three critical production sub-lines: Laminations Manufacturing, Coil Manufacturing, and Core and Tank Assembly. In this role, you will bridge design engineering and high-volume output—mentoring a team of manufacturing technicians, optimizing core-and-coil assembly workflows, and driving strict adherence to quality and safety standards. You will work very closely with Engineering to setup and validate this process. Your leadership will directly enable Torus to deliver high-reliability, custom power components for our mesh energy infrastructure and modular power plant deployments.

Requirements

  • 3 to 5+ years of experience supervising operations in transformer manufacturing, heavy electromechanical production, or motor/generator fabrication.
  • Demonstrated hands-on expertise in transformer sub-assembly processes, including steel lamination processing, precision magnet wire coil winding, core lacing, or transformer tanking/sealing.
  • Proven track record of direct supervisory leadership on a fast-paced manufacturing shop floor.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex 2D/3D mechanical drawings, structural weldments, and electrical single-line schematics.
  • Strong working knowledge of hand/power tools, torque specs, precision measuring tools (micrometers, calipers), and basic electrical test equipment.
  • Familiarity with ERP systems and standard Microsoft Office / digital shop-floor tools.
  • Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English required.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate degree or Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Industrial Technology, or equivalent trade school completion/apprenticeship.
  • Experience with liquid-filled transformer tanking processes (vacuum drying, oil filling, bushing installation, tap changer setup).
  • Overhead crane and rigging safety certification or experience supervising heavy overhead maneuvers.
  • Formal training in Lean Manufacturing, 5S, or Six Sigma methodologies.

Responsibilities

  • Directly supervise shift operations and lead personnel across three dedicated manufacturing lines: Laminations Manufacturing, Coil Manufacturing, and Core & Tank Assembly.
  • Manage daily production scheduling, material flow, and labor allocation to meet target production rates while minimizing work-in-progress bottlenecks.
  • Provide direct hands-on technical leadership in silicon steel slitting/stacking, layer/disc coil winding, core lacing, structural clamping, and final tank fit-up.
  • Interpret engineering drawings, single-line schematics, mechanical assemblies, and Bills of Materials (BOMs) to establish clear manufacturing processes and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Partner with Quality Assurance to perform root-cause analysis on non-conformances, enforce strict electrical/dimensional tolerance standards, and drive yield improvements.
  • Oversee shop-floor safety programs, ensuring strict compliance with OSHA regulations, overhead crane/hoist safety, lockout/tagout (LOTO), and PPE requirements.
  • Train, onboard, and evaluate Transformer Manufacturing Technicians, building a versatile, cross-trained work staff.
  • Utilize ERP systems (NetSuite) to track job traveler routings, inventory consumption, and production metrics (OEE, labor hours).
  • Drive 5S, Lean, and Kaizen initiatives across the transformer fabrication area to improve shop-floor safety, ergonomics, and throughput.
  • Other duties and projects as assigned.
